A Word Of Warning - Photocard Licences !!!

I think they saw me floundering, pedalling uphill on the bypass near their office and maybe thought I could do with more exercise... :o

(Pontoneer) Yes , my photocard licence started in 2003 , when I had to register a change of address , and expires in 2013 .

There's a thing. I got my first and only photcard licence after changing my address and my licence runs for 10 years also (expiring in 2016 - my paper one expired in 2033.)

Is this a standard period of entitlement if you change your address I wonder?

Paul.

Must vary from one hire company to the next . I've hired numerous vehicles , both in the UK and abroad (Europe) with just the photocard part ( in Germany & Italy they asked for my passport as well ) .

Ive hired loads of cars in the UK and everytime they need both parts. Even for test drives when ive been asked to bring it allong ive needed both parts.

its the photo that needs renewing every 10 years. not the license. The license continues until your 70, and then you have to get some Dr to say you can drive after then and you can keep on doing so, until the Dr says you are too useless and old to drive.

All of the above does not include those who have too many points or have had their license removed.

Changing address is free, and it does not change any expiry dates.

Me and the wife both still have the folding paper variety, mine with the handwritten speeding penalties:eek:

Presumably you haven't changed address for some time. I can't remember which move it was, but it was one of my change of addresses that saw them switch me to a photocard.

I received a courtesy call from a DVLA rep only on Thursday - asking if I had received a recent reminder to update my photo licence. I hadn't.... but there again, my licence was only renewed last summer after scumbags in Milan stole all my personal belongings, including my DL.
A quick check of the DVLA database would have shown a new expiry of 2018. Doh!

I thought everyone had been changed to the new ones as that was a legal requirement?

not a requirement. i only changed mine due to my old paper one falling apart.

I know you are supposed to present the second paper part but I have never been asked for it either in the UK or Overseas, the photocard has always been good enough, think it's as Pontoneer says varies from company to company (although it shouldn't). I've even arrived in the US when the desk has been closed and the car booked on line (so they have my card details) and they have just left the keys with the Valet guy no paperwork, presentation of licence or nothing.

If you don't have the paper counterpart you can ask the hire company to phone the DVLA to confirm your endorsements........it's worked for me twice now.

The thing that amazes me is why do you need to have two parts. mine is one of the older style photo cards so not sure if the new ones have chips in them. Surely they could do this and store all your data on there. Endorsments etc.

Then again how much more would they charge us for this?
