Ahh! the benefits of EV motoring....

Exactly. Large luxury, sporty EV’s don’t yet exist. But they will, in due course, but probably not as quickly as the EU’s schedule.

Infotainment systems? Like seatbelts, lightbulbs, gearboxes and brakepads, such things belong to the component supplier, not to the car assembler. CarPlay works, bespoke inbuilt tech like linguatronics doesn’t work when you get it and becomes even more laughable at five or ten years old.
Totally agree, but am sure Porsche would be toasted if the new Macan ev is launched with no box of tricks and nav built in.

So 1200 miles in 15 hours of actual driving?...thats an AVERAGE of 80mph!. Even on our mad bikes runs to the South of France for the BolDor we never managed that. Not saying it didn't happen but to average 80mpg would mean rarely dropping below about 110mph.......other wise you would lose all the time on junctions, roundabouts, refuelling etc.
No . I had simply gone on to reserve after less than 80 miles !:p
Range is really the only thing which prevents it being real long distance car.
Some years back, when le flics were not a pestilence, I rattled down this section of the A71 in just under two hours.

Wasn’t too impressed with range though, as I emptied the tank at around 15mpg.

Most EVs on the motorway go at 60-65 mph. I always imagine a nasally voice saying "no Dierdre turn the heater off and put your coat on otherwise my mi/kwh will mean we have to queue for electrons again". However, the high end ones like EQS and Taycan are lovely...

Pah! You're not even in the proper heavy users league!
After the Bentley Le Mans win in 2003, the commissioned me to investigate having a go at the production car 24hr speed record with a Flying Spur.
This was slightly longer and had better Cd than a Conti GT. So off I trotted down to NARDO test facility in the heel of Italy to join one of the development tests down there. The car would genuinely lap the 8 mile bowl at over a 200mph average, but what astonished me was the test team were happy to do this in an open face helmet, T shirt and shorts! Anyone from motorsport would have at least full fireproofs, proper helmet and a 6 point harness.
See Grosjean for details.
But we decided to check the range at 200mph to check viability of the proposed attempt. After 15 mins the rear diff was getting a bit toasty, and after 20 mins the car was out of fuel.
There are only a handful of places on earth that you can travel at this speed legally and nobody had ever driven a modern Bentley that fast for so long.
That would mean about 3 fuel stops per hour! We couldn't get the fuelling time much below 3 mins with the standard fill system and the FIA would give no dispensation to fit a quick fill system to a production car (they would allow a roll cage for safety though!) so the numbers didn't really add up.
But 4 mpg is a good effort! The Le Mans winning, proper racing car averaged about 7mpg to average almost 140mph around the Le Mans circuit for 24 hrs.

I do too many motorway miles but I don’t see that, and the many people I know with EVs say they drive at the same speeds as they do in ICEs. I do most of my motorway miles south of from Manchester/Leeds so perhaps it’s different further North.

Maybe it’s geography specific and in the remote areas EV drivers take a more prudent approach to reduce the risk of running out of charge when charging points are fewer and further between.

Yeah, I literally drive mine exactly the same way as my ICE cars.

We do a *lot* of motorway mileage (mostly M5 / M6 / M40 / M42 / M54 now) and have noticed that. Mostly Tesla Model 3s, but of course they're relatively numerous compared to other EVs.

If you're not in a hurry I guess it makes sense as I understand the range reduces faster than an ICE vehicle as you speed up. I suppose by going a bit slower and avoiding a charging stop you could actually arrive sooner.

Yes i totally understand too but it seems very dreary if you're a petrol head (I suppose we should adopt the Americanism of gear head now!)

They were perhaps 2.1 litre diesel driving misers beforehand so their speed hasn't changed? 😅 (I have nothing against EVs, i quite like some of them, but they do understandably encourage people to hypermile, which though I genuinely can see the attraction of, it's not for me)

Not really....they haven't got gears either!

Top class amusement at those who one minute are droaning on about the endless mpg they get from their wondrous diesel (figures only ever produced in reality by first class Mimsers) and then in the next minute call out EV owners for focussing on range😅

Driving an EV a bit like you stole it is what many do everyday, and, as more public charging stations come on line, even more will do same.

Hypocrisy central on this forum. Gets tiring. 🥱😂
