The EV fact thread

Question: why do most, of not all, EV charging point have a little kerb a couple of feet in front of them? Other parking spaces, and petrol pumps, don’t have this. The only reason I can think of is the danger of fire if one is clouted. Scary.

Simple really, so you don't back into or drive into the charger. Which no doubt some would. Why would ordinary parking spaces have them. And Petrol pumps you drive side on to them, so why would they have them, they've usually got posts around them. Think it's a bit of common sense to have them.
Not scary at all. A bit of over thinking, methinks. 🙂

What’s going to burn? It’s just a cable and it will have protection circuits built in.

You wouldn’t want to bump into a fuel pump either really?

So I can sleep at night again now?

Because a high speed DC charger probably costs around £50,000 each.
So if you back into one there is the cost, downtime and inconvenience of getting it fixed and running again!
I just checked and apparently a 350kw DC charger costs around £120,000

That's a lot of wonga to have sitting idle when the pikeys nick the elephant trunk thick 350kw cables .........

Never even thought about the cost of the actual charger, Steve. But yeh, another good reason to have a buffer between the charger and the vehicle. 🙂👍

Not sure what you're referring to? There's usually something in place to stop cars from inadvertently crashing into the chargers....

The heavy copper charging cable is liquid cooled to prevent them overheating.
Apparently Tesla are adding a blue smart dye to this liquid on their new superchargers - so that anybody that cuts the cable gets marked!

Ok, it seems it was a bit of a daft question - but then, when most if not all EVs (and recent/new ICE, for that matter), will have parking sensors, if not reversing cameras, possibly not completely daft, maybe?

All petrol pumps have a kerb around them to protect them too....mandatory. Not heard anyone on here querying why about those though!!!

They are already bought and paid for.

But that's a classic argument for never investing in infrastructure.

You could equally argue that all the steam trains have already been paid for, as well as the water and coal pit stops.

Or that we've already invested in black & white TV broadcasting equipment, why move to colour TV.

Etc etc.

The list is long.

Perhaps that is simply because people generally roll up along side pumps whereas charger's tend to be in bays that cars drive into.
