AMG Bumpers on the SEC!

This was the other design I was considering, (you'll probably know this car from MBcoupes.com) but Like Nav, I think the exhausts look like an under slung afterthought.

The genuine AMG rear skirt has a small recess for the pipes on the near side, I'm considering taking that out a little further and semi recessing twin ovals.

that's Satish's car if i'm correct. Currently running a V12 M120, and a few years back a M119 V8!

I think you need to recess the exhaust into the bumper to make it look like its meant to be there. I believ on the AMG bumper its hard work, you'll have to change the pipework at the rear box.

I took great consideration before choosing my rear bumper/exhaust set up. Currently i'm running a rear silencer on each side, not the cheaper one box, 2 outlet design.

Personally i love my car, i made it just the way i wanted to. I'm not after any concours awards, i just want something that looks agressive and this fits the bill.

If i do decide to sell it i probably will put the original AMG rear bumper back on and remove the exhaust as it would appeal to a greater number of potentila buyers.

At the moment i have no plans to sell, if i have the car for a few more years i will transplant a V12 into it as i have a full Brabus conversion kit to 7.3 litres, but its only a thought at the moment. I'm going to give Talbir a hand with his V12 SEL conversion over Christmas, so if everything goes to plan with his i'll start sourcing a V12 for mine.

I have an original Carat Dutchalet speedo, with cream dials which i'll put into the SEC when i get a chance. Should look good with the black/cream colour combo.

Well im liking the clean look so far, the others just look terrible...

I think im going to stick to the setup i have, i,e a small oval exit at either side, but will ensure they dont stick out too far..

Yup that's Satish's car, initially I liked the twin set up, but it really does need to be recessed to look right.

The V12 is quite some fabrication, and I think the car loses something by having that done.

There was a Cat C E55 linked to on Piston heads recently.....That got me thinking, an E55 Engine into an SEC would be more suitable for the car and still keep the same character.

Mudster, there are certain compatibilty reasons why the V12 engine can be done if the right donor car (of the right era) is sourced...

You would struggle to get an E55 engine to work due to the electronics involved...

I was going to suggest a M119 conversion to you, especially as you're reshelling the car. it will be no extra work or cost to have it done either which makes it very tempting. The M119 is alot more smoother to drive. it has alot more torque than the 560, and is more economical to run.

The joy with the M119 is that its very similar to the M117 and the wiring isn't complicated either. the problem with the E55 engine is that its more complicated to wire as it require alot of CAN signals.

If i put a M120 engine into the SEC i would have no intentions of selling it. I had planned a M119 conversion a year back but the thought of losing the character changed my mind. The M120 would be done for sheer speed and power :D But again i will only do it once i have driven one first to make sure its what i want.

Pre 95 W140 or more ideally a R129 SL.

the engine/box are a relatively straight fit, not alterations to the firewall, just custom mounts required along with a week of wiring!

The W140 V12 will need a R129 SL V12 sump to clear the cross member at the bottom.

I've already got an engine, and went with a Factory new 560 simply because it was new and I think this car is so much more a cruiser than a racer. It's not exactly a daily driver either.

The SEC's look wonderful with all the windows down, and that's just fine at under 30mph which is how it's going to be driven most of the time.

Anyway, I'm considering getting something silly as a daily driver anyway (mentioned in the PM) so I'm not overly worried about a huge power output from the SEC, its more about the looks than the go, but saying that, I wouldn't have done any other model than a 560 :D.

Yes i have to say, i would never ever consider swapping the engine... i do often think that a more modern gearbox would make much better use of the power though!

This was my exhaust setup before the new bumper was fitted....

I completely agree, but wouldn't it be nice if you had 500BHP+ at the tip of the right foot

The problem is that i can't afford to keep a powerful car as a daily driver, it has to be a diesel. On the weekend i sometimes want something fast, i've had alot of quick cars in the past and i do miss the power.

i don't drive hard, i take it easy in the SEC, i like you like to cruise and be seen in the car. Its just for those days you want sheer pace. I believ the V12 will make the SEC into my ultimate weekend cruiser.

KLP,

Sorry if you did not like my opinion, I tell it how it is and the first picture of the twin pipes fitted were NOT fitted as the pictures further on show it certainly looks neater now they must have been adjusted?. I was simply answering what I liked??

Also I did not say your CAR looks like a vectra, simply imo the pipes look like they came off a vectra.

By the way I love the SEC my dad had one when I was little albeit a 500SEC but that was when they were new. He also loved it and did 70K miles in that car so I'm not knocking the car one bit they still look better than a lot of new stuff and built much better!!

If my opinion is not yours then that's fine, thats what an opinion is and a good job we are all different, don't be a funny un and suggest I need glasses please.

Thanks

In all honesty, if thyat was my car i wouldn't bother with the exhaust.

The car looks nice as it is, the original AMG exhaust always looked like an after thought and IMHO loses the symmetrical shape of the car. Thats the reason i went for the twin rear box design, i wouldn't have put the single rear box on my car.

I'll dig some pics out to show what i mean later on.

I agree, the car looks great as it is.
