Anyone in the South with secondary cat delete

Applies to cars fitted with a CAT from factory - even before 1993/K when they were compulsory.

I had an 91/H reg Astra GTE 16v in 1996 - and it had a CAT fitted. I swapped a straight-through pipe from a G reg one but that would now potentially fail if it were still alive, albeit unlikely.

Insurance company should be notified with exactly what has been done. Mine is insured a 'modified or non-standard exhaust'.

They do ask and I tell them it is to make it louder.

That's the truth...

Well, thanks to the guys at the Goodwood meet, I will definitely be having mine done, sounds much better !!

Hi Dan,

Good to meet up with you, your car looks great.

Re exhaust, don't forget to keep what you cut out, so you can reverse the mod to standard should you ever need to.

Cheers

Thanks for the advice JohnEBoy. I've informed my insurance additional cost £12 plus £17 admin fee ! Now I need to find someone to actually do the mod. My local Kwik guys don't want to touch it. Have put a request into Profusioncustoms.

I think Ollie (PCS) does this kind of thing - he is a forum regular so might be worth a word... not a million miles from Reading.

Or if st albans isnt too far speak to the guys at emp perfprmance

Who have you booked it in with.

I had secondary de-cat and res box removed on my E55k, straight pipe, sounds great....make sure they use adequate surge protection when welding, you don't want any ECU issues, most garages use this as standard.....had a nasty experience with my CL a few years ago, door ECU disturbed resulting in window function issue (had it re-set on STAR so was lucky)

Just curious, as when things get back to some normality, what exhaust mod to do on the 6.2 N/A.

I have taken the advice on here from well informed members not to touch the resonator and I will keep to that advice. As I do think with experience of this, that you do introduce drone with Res delete, and I don't want this at any cost.

The option I want to go with is secondary cats delete with either straight pipes or have an X pipe fitted. This is where it's gets a bit iffy for me.

What is the better option to go with the 6.2 N/A lump. For more sound, but to keep the AMG bark as stock as possible? Is this even achievable?

Or is it case of once you play about with the exhaust system you lose that original tone?

Info and advice most welcome.

Thanks

I disagree with the resonator delete. I think its the best low cost exhaust mod you can do. It doesn't drone at all. We must have done about 50 of them and two of them are cars that my employees own. Removing the cats is a bit naughty really. It is officially an MOT failure too if any cat is removed. I think VOSA will be clamping down on garages that do the cat delete and cars that have them removed.

Trust me. The resonator delete sounds amazing.

Its hard to disagree with someone with your experience and knowledge with the industry you are in. But it seems there is conflicting information on such mods. You can 100% confirm with a resonator delete, there will be no drone at all.

Can you advise on what is better suited to go in place of the resonator. X pipe or straight pipes?

Does it also depend on engine, N/A or supercharged or turbocharged?

This thread & any future topic advocating the illegal modification of exhausts should be deleted. If advertising illegal software is specifically banned why isn't advocating or advertising illegal exhaust mods?

We use straight pipes. I see no advantage to an x pipe in performance or sound.

Bets thing you can do is to hear one. I dont think they drone at all.

I have owned a car with the exact mod. Personally the drone was only very slight at certain rpm. And at I would say cruising speed. 70/80 mph. It was the X pipe I had fitted. Was an E55K.

Very conflicting advice in general it has to be said with all exhaust mods that are made to AMG vehicles. :dk:

Resonator delete is not illegal, removing secondary cats is a grey area. In theory its still legal (emissions wise) as the primary cats still allow the car to pass MOT emission laws, however if the MOT tester spots any modification it will fail.

Removing the Primary/all is illegal.

For the record, on my '63, once I removed the centre resonator, I started getting burbles the odd pop on overrun. Brilliant, simple mod.

This is an interesting read.

With the mods I go with I don't want to lose the AMG stock tone. I just want to amplify it that bit more. Can owners please advise on what is the best way forward on this.

I think there are better suited mods for N/A cars and bi-turbo and supercharged cars.

Mines a N/A, what would bring the noise up a level best, without any drone?

Thanks
