Theoretically we have right controls, we are supposed to provide ID and a V5 or equivalent to get plates made. But so easy to order up a set on eBay that I don’t usually bother going down the legit route - trip to Halfords etc. And oh so simple to nick the plates off another carThat’s a reasonable comment and I appreciate that Malta has a smaller and less mobile population, but they have a really tight grip of where number plates may be obtained.
A system could be engineered to suit the U.K. but obviously that would curtail manufacturers supplying customers direct, some without any form of ID. The demise of local DVLA offices in favour of an online service has improved some aspects of registration processes, but has also removed an option for local manufacturing under Government control.
Until loopholes like online ordering without ID are closed, cloning seems likely to continue, especially with the increased use of ANPR technology. There was an instance on one of the many Police Interceptor TV programmes when the Thames Valley Police had been getting a number of parking and speed camera fines relating to one of their BMW patrol cars. The culprit was finally caught when spotted by the sharp-eyed police officer driving the patrol car whose number he had cloned to put on his same model white BMW!
The moral of this would appear to be to make sure the car number you’re cloning is road legal and not an emergency services vehicle!
Only yesterday I came across a BOB plate and was quite tempted, and for the first time, but Mrs D made it quite clear than I’m a Rob and not a Bob.Previously posted 10 TOM.

These two led me to think of the reg 10 BOB.
It does exist and is on a 2014 gold Range Rover.
Nice plate for Bobby Dazzler.
Come on Rob, you know it makes sense.
