Anyone seen any good number plates on cars lately?

007 may be a licence plate to thrill, but it is pure fiction...

Seen S 007 though, on a golden Rolls, several times over the past few years....

Belongs to a local property developer.

It is spaced S 007, and I first noticed this car (and plate) some 15 years ago, around Edgware... seen it round central London more recently. Well I can't be sure it's the same Roller, but if he did change the car then it seems that he just replaced one golden Rolls with another...

Wrong car! :)

Not sure why I snapped this one:

my understanding Q was never issued as it is used for cars which origin cannot be determined i personally never seen 1 RAQ on embassy car or QTR 1 either

Q is for kit cars AFAIK. I had a Q-reg car once, a company car, it was built in the early nineties by a firm in the Midlands who bought new Ford Escort Estate body shells from Dagenham and fitted them with second-hand running gear and trim. But the plate had the usual format for the period, i.e Q123 ABC (can't remember exactly what it was now).

Saw EDS 1 on a Mustang today.... can't imagine that the CEO of EDS is a neighbour though...

There are special "Q" plates that are issued to cars of indeterminate origin (particularly where the original registration date cannot be verified, or where they have been made up from more than one donor car), but Q is also used in some of the specially-assigned diplomatic plates (where any letter can be used). I've seen QTR 1, btw...

But the plate had the usual format for the period, i.e Q123 ABC (can't remember exactly what it was now).

That format was introduced in 1983, around the same time as the A-prefix series. They are both non-transferrable and non-replaceable, so basically once a car has been issued with one, it's stuck with it (not aware of any exceptions to this). Prior to that, kit cars just used to get the registration of the main donor or, if enough new parts were used, a new, current registration. Permanently imported cars also used to get the current registration letter (there are still a few of these apparent anachronisms roaming the streets of London).

Temporarily imported cars used to get 4x2 plates with a Q as the first letter (eg: 1234 QE) until 1981, when this was reversed (QE 1234), before being replaced by the Q-prefix style mentioned above in 1983.

A rare Saab Zagato?
