Anyone seen any good number plates on cars lately?

WAV 1 on a nice red CLK320 in Glasgow today
 
Is there a way to check the plate history, e.g. When was it bought, how much for, how many owners, etc.?

That's something I wanted to know about my plate that I have owned for the last 6 years but when I asked I was told no by dvla.:doh:

Don't know if that's the current answer as it was a year or two ago I asked and they gave me the reasons of data protection, it would take too long and too many resources.:crazy:

The DVLA will provide the current keeper of a car with details of previous keepers back to when the car was new (for a small fee), but I'm not aware of any similar service covering the history of registrations.

For a plate bought at a DVLA auction (1989 onwards) you can check online to find out when it was sold and the original hammer price, but that's about it. There is also a series of independently published books listing details submitted by plate owners, although coverage is obviously highly sporadic and updates are decidedly infrequent.

Not sure this is correct.

I see on a daily basis, registration marks far earlier than 1970.

I presume the owner is patiently awaiting the day when the DVLA will allow a registration to be transferred without requiring the donor vehicle to hold a current MoT. Me too. :(

Presumably not, and it would be resold.

The official line is that when a car is scrapped, its registration becomes "void", effectively meaning that it is lost forever. There is a short grace period during which a plate can be retained or transferred following the expiry of the MoT, but I think that's no more than six months.

However, the DVLA seem to be waking up to the potential value of certain void plates, as at least one has been released for sale: 1 D had been void since the 1970s, but was sold in 2009 for a hammer price of £285,000.

I had a feeling it was owned by Porsche, I'm sure I've seen it before on a white 911 in Chieveley Services on the M4.
 
CLA55 and CLA55Y on cars on the same day in Glasgow many years ago.
