ASR Light on

In ASR 2 systems there's a pressure accumulator device to maintain hydraulic pressure in the system. ( under the nearside wing?) It contains pressurised Nitrogen. If it fails to maintain system presure the warning light is going to go on. Another possibility??

I almost came unstuck on this thread by using MB data that said this was not used until 1991 It was the ASR11 that came out in 1991. Jays car does have ASR1 from every thing that I could find, unless any can show other wise

My 560SEC (1990) also has ASR (and an airbag) - I actually had a similar problem and my car dropped into a limp home mode with a rev restriction. It did this only once and never reoccurred.

A week later though, the rear self levelling suspension dumped all it's oil over the rear hub/wheel/axle - so I wonder if this was actually causing a problem via a small leak.

I've had the entire levelling system replaced/overhauled and not had the ASR light back on since. Try the obvious (cheap) things before you start replacing expensive electrickery.

Malcolm I was thinking that ASR 1 (which you rightly point out is what Jay would have) would also have an accumulator like ASR 2 but don't know for sure?

Mudster, as I understand it your LHM symptoms normally indicate a problem with the electronic throttle/cruise control rather than the ASR system but since they are interlinked it results in the ASR light coming on.

Jay assuming your battery isnt new I would definitely try a temporary battery swop with one you know is in excellent condition. An easy thing to try which you should be able to do with all the cars at your disposal.;) Just dont know if a fluid change would help any-- I doubt it

If it is going to be a rainy day tomorrow I will get all the documents out and send them to him, yes they all have an accumulator

ASR accumulator

Heres a diagram of the ASR ACCUMULATOR UNIT. Its pressurised to 100bar nitrogen when new and if this has leaked away gradually????? Don't think there is any way to test this without the proper equipment. Atho I am going on about this as a possible alternative fault I still feel the problem is probably electrical.
edit:- just looked up the price of an accumulator on the Inchcape site part no 0004301094 cost £845-38

IF the accumulator has lost it's pressure and is causing the fault symptoms, then contact a Citroen sphere recharging company they should be able to recharge the nitrogen.

Thanks, but its a brand new bosch battery i put in two months back...

I really dont think i have an accumulator but would welcome suggestions otherwise and where i could find it..

Just asking :o but was that about the same time as you started getting the ASR light coming on i.e. when you got the new battery?? or was it after the burst radiator incident??

no i lie, i think i changed the battery shortly after i bought the car so around May id say... the ASR light came on a few weeks back..

I wish these things could just be plugged in to tell you whats at fault.. all this investigation is annoying!

Ill have a look on the EPC tomorrow as it has good diagrams of the whole ASR layout...

the accumulator should be under the wing near the bulkhead behind the plastic wheel arch liner if its there. Dont know if its nearside on a rhd car but probably nearest to the abs unit and asr pump.

ok thanks graeme, ill look into it at the weekend along with changing the brake light switch... no way im getting it out in this weather ;)

Jay, I have been trying to down load the pages to the memory stick but cant find a way yet, the MB program does not run in windows and I cant get the info off to put into the USB stick, if I could call the USB stick a printer it would be ok.

I will ask on the section with computers

thanks Malcolm, i think the ASR2 is a lot more advanced, im reading about it now...

I have received the brake light switch and i tell you, its a lot more complicated looking than modern ones, its made of metal for a start, weighs a bit and has four connections...

i can see how this could fail after 20 years, but still not holding up much hope...

Just want to give a timescale:

April: Bought the car and two lights in dash were on, bulb and washer fluid, these would come on randomly... Occasionally only one of the warning lights came on.

May: Changed the battery for new Bosch unit.

July: After mucho head scratching found that someone had swaped the lamps around and actually the two lights that were on were ABS and ASR!!!

August: Knowing the most likely culprit would be wheel speed sensors, i had a play around with connectors, wiring etc and both the lights went off. The ABS light has not come back on since.

September: ASR light starts to come on by itself. Now we know that speed sensors cause the ABS light to come on, so not that... OVP changed and its not that...

by the way just had an interesting chat with the local "approved bosch service centre", i had to explain what ASR was and how it works!! told me to take it the dealer..

Right ive found this on the EPC. Its not valid for my car, it says its only on the W124,129 & 140...

Phew!

Bugger... ive found the pump (77) and "accumulator" (101) on the EPC... the pump is £1800 + vat and the accumulator £845... please dont let it be these otherwise i see them being disconnected....

any idea how i would test this? apart from trying to locate the "collection Chamber" as i have now found that i definately have one of these babies..
