Autobox wont change gear on CL - HELP!

I am quite shocked by the negative reaction to the happy outcome of a rare high spec merc being sorted.

It is obvious that Jay trades in cars and I think its a credit to him to take the trouble to sort out the problem rathen then taking the easy option of sticking the car back in the auctions and passing it on to the next enthusiast.

I very much agree with your sentiments. Great news Jay i am very pleased it has been sorted out.

This is why this Forum is the best.

Maybe this forum is more populated by posts relating to commercial activity than I, at least, had realized.

I had understood that on-site commercial activites were confined to the classified section, where everyone knows where they stand.

If a member joins as a private individual and then becomes a trader it is quite understandable that he might not see that his changed staus might alter the attitude of other members to his posts.

However, when technical help with trade stock as against a member's personal transport is involved, with respect, I beg to differ.

Well I spent about an hour helping out Jay (albeit most of this time being due to my limited IT proficiency!) and have no problem with him selling the car on. I thought this forum was all about helping other members when we can.

Hi Guys,

Apologies to malcolm and others if you feel cheated in any way.

i make it very clear that Mercland is my business. As dieselman points out I have been around for a very long time before i started trading. It was my hobby which turned into a full time occupation last year.

To be honest, i dont see the difference, we are all here to help each other out and im happy to give advise and do ocassionally ask for some in return.

There have been many members on here who are linked to the industry in some way and I think that enriches the forum rather than degrade it.
some examples: Ricky (V12), Jimmy, IanBWalker etc etc...

I am not a large company, this is my sole livelihood and it was causing me sleepless nights so i turned to this forum and its members for advise. They did help me out for which I am thankful.

Of course id be happy to buy Malcolm and anyone else a pint at the next GTG!

I hope this hasnt left any hard feeling, twas not my intention, honestly.
Ill try and make myself clearer in the future.

Guys,
I think we are all getting a bit hot under the collar..... whats happened has happened lets let bygons be bygons..
I have had alot of help from this forum and other forums albeit it was for my own car and im not a trader and i am really apreciative for the wealth of knowledge especially from some of the members on here.

Please lets all get past the differences maybe tread a bit more carefully in the future.

Malcolm, i know that you work relly hard on getting information, as you have done with my problems in the past, im sure that everyone here really values you enthuisasm and knowledge base, please dont let this stop you in giving others invaluable information in future.

Regards

Raj

Yes I agree, i cant express on a forum how much I appreciate the help on this, especially from Malcolm and SG CL500.

Thanks Guys.

I still dont see the difference, whatever my occupation i am an active member of this forum, i contribute more than i take away and simply dont see the issue. Its irrelavent what im going to do with the car. I own the car, me, myself and I, not a company.

If any other member was having a problem say whilst in the process of selling their car I doubt anyone would hold back from dispensing advise.

I dont want to mention any names but we regularly help others on here who are also making a living from Mercedes related activities.

ive apologised once so im going to leave it at that.

Thanks for the advise, I appreciate it fully.

Sorry about the last post of mine where I "said let it pass", I had written out a 94,682 word posting, but it took so long to write out, by the time I posted it there were a lot more answers, and these made me re think. I could not post nothing, so I said let it pass, to let me go for a drive and re think.

I eccept that I was out of order complaing in the first place, and I am sorry for the extra work it has caused other members.

When I read where Jay said that he did not sleep the night he bought the car, I realised that Jay is just a nice guy having a go on his own.

Back in 1967 I was at BCA in Tunbridge Wells, and the last car to be sold was a ex goverment 1966 Humber Imperial, as there were only two people left it was knocked down to me for £100 Sold as seen. though it had only done 12k miles it was stuck in 1st gear, and I drove home to Watford. Dont think that I slept that night. Cant remember if it was a 35 or model 8 gearbox, but at a cost of £22 for the new brake bands that took me 6 hours to fit,it was then perfect and it sold for £700. the average wage then was £20 a week.

What am I trying to say here is that I have been there and done it. Jay is a very nice guy, and If I could help any way in the future I will do so.

I am sorry and was out of order and Jay, good luck with your venture, Dont laugh but I have been on my own since 1952.

malcolm

Thanks Malcolm, feel a bit better now as it not nice to think i had made anyone feel cheated...

It was an impulse purchase, when i saw it I was drawn towards it, but just doesnt fit the bill of what i normally stock... ive learnt my lesson, auctions can be very very dangerous and even with my (10+ years) experience of buying at these places, i was caught out.
luckily it didnt end up costing me the fortune that i was dreading and now hopefully it will find a happy new owner sometime soon.

thanks all

In reality it's probably turned out to be a good buy and leaves more margin than a fully working car would have done.

Something worth going to are the special Bank of Scotland sales, normally around 30-150 MBs each time. they are all sold off at 3 years with very low milages. They have to be sold as seen, this though is not the same thing as a one off private or dealer entry.

3 years back they had a 2001 SL320 that sold for £16.5k that was £3k under bottom book, not enough goodies on it for me.

The advantage of selling a little up market is that easier to sell one good one, than two cheaper ones, for only half of the work.

I always went for the most unusual cars that I could get, there is only the one car,and you only need one buyer. The CL you have is a rare one.

Good luck. malcolm

Exactly why i bought it malcolm, i have the same approach too.

This was actually a Pendragon car, not a small company! So again all of their cars are sold as seen but their reputation is good and have bought well over 50 Pendragon cars in the last 8 months without problems..

Bank of Scotland i find to be very expensive and they sell at the "top marques" sale in which i find the prices to be inflated anyway...

Dieselman - im not sure it was that much of a bargain really, i had bought it on the assumption of no issues and my provisional bid was not accepted, I had to pay more to get it in the end... thats why i was kicking myself as i could have had the option of leaving it if i had known about the problem...

Hey Jay,
At least i know where to come next time i look for a car.... or sell one for that instance, as your local.... ;0>

Hi all, I have a C220 Cdi (w202) and am having similar problems with my auto gearbox. Its only done it 6 times in the last 4 months, when i start the car and drive away in "D" and set in "W" the gearbox wont change out of 2nd, so I have to pull over and turn the engine off but the gearstick will only go into neutral until I turn the ignition to 0 then the gearstick will move to park. Once I have restarted the engine and put the gearstick into drive (slowly) it seems to sort itself out.

Any Ideas?????? you help is appreciated, thanks Tony

Well the speed sensor plate at gearbox is very common. It will do this intermittently and gradually get worse.. Its due to a seal on this plate that lets oil onto the sensor.

Apparently this fault has cost MB UK almost £800K so far and the bills are still coming in.

Is your car under warranty?

well you need to get it diagnosed to see what the exact problem is. If it is this plate then the part is only £120 but fitting is a major job as the bottom of the gearbox needs to be dismantled, all oil out etc...

so whatever the problem is it should show up on a diagnostic computer then?
