Axle stands / trolley jack

those £10 halfords axle stands are more than adequate. If I were buying a trolley jack I'd be looking at a 3 tonne one, not really for it's lifting capability but because they are usually a bit bigger and can lift higher. My old 2 tonne trolley jack wouldn't extend far enough to lift a W124 off the ground

Which are the recommended spots the axle stand should be placed to support the car without damaging it?

If you are jacking from the diff or front cross member you really need a chunky jack like my 3 ton one.
I do carry a smaller 2 ton one in the boot which is ok for side jacking on one of the rubber jacking points on the sill. You can see the size difference.

on the W124 the rubber blocks underneath the jacking points are ideal but then you'll need a decent jack to lift it using the diff or crossmember
