BAS/ASR Fault, variation on the theme?

Evening all,

Got the BAS/ASR fault on my W202 C240 Sport Auto, and it's getting more and more regular. Have read the multitude of threads regarding the brake switch (which will be getting done this weekend), is it normal for the car to go into limp mode when the light comes on? Gets annoying having to pull over, switch off then back on again. Strangely came all the way back from Southampton last week without a flicker!

Also got it booked in at WDM in Perry Barr, Bham for an A service and Gearbox oil change on Friday. The lads there are going to pull the fault history while it's in so will post any associated fault codes then. Also an honest opinion of how they were. From the price quoted for the work planned, if they're any good I'll be going back again if they're any good.

It's not normal to suffer limp home due to a BAS/ASR issue.
What exactly do you mean by 'Limp home'.? If it's the engine returning to idle then that's a result of the brake light switch making the brake contact so the accelerator is ignored.

I would advise that you don't buy any part to change and have the codes read first. A good indy probably charge you £45

It could be all mannor of things and what triggers it on my car could be totallly different on yours. Ok the parts only £10 and 30 mins to fit, if its not that its £10 wasted?

With my car the fault code led then to a rear wheel speed sensor, but as I say it could be a number of things on yours they are not ALL the same fix.

Mine is doing a similar thing, but not going into limp mode. The brake switch change didnt appear to help, so i would deff. take it to a specialist and see what's going on.

Looking outside, this is not the best time to be without BAS/ASR

Mine just has one light lit up, BAS/ASR written on top of each other in an orange light on the left. It's intermittent, but when showing there's nothing to help you out in an emergency.

The car is with Olly now, so as soon as he's had chance to diagnose the problem i'll let you know what it was!

Out of interest, was the rear wheel sensor a big/expensive fix??

from memory, rear sensor was about £70 from the main dealers, fitting was straight forward once the old sensor body was freed-off the housing

Yes, by "limp" the engine returns to idle, and when in P or N the idle is erratic. Once restarted all returns to normal, until the bl***y light comes on again.....

The indy fixed mine and charged £45

They had to remove rear arch, and they had another loom off another car, connected it up giving it more cable (thats where it was damaged) and put it all back together.


I drove a week with all the lights on, very un nerving really especially when I tested the brakes and noticed the ABS didn't kick in?

All done now though and I was worried after googling the problem and hearing of controls units and ABS units being replaced and costs were up there quickly.. *£1000 or more

hi, i am interested to know your findings as my c240 has the same problem ASR/BAS light illuminated loss of cruise control. But ABS working ok.

Think mine's more likely a speed sensor, as i noticed this morning the light comes on when slowing from lower speeds by easing off the gas, not when the brake is pressed. ABS still works with the light lit, as slowing to the side of the road with snow/ice on it the ABS kicked in.

Mine was resolved yesterday with a new brake switch :bannana:

The first replacement (new) one was faulty when sent from the motor factors. Olly suspected this was the case and so ordered a working replacement, which resolved the problem.

I cant comment as to whether the issue you guys have is the same, but at less than a tenner it's a good starting point and seems to be common for tripping the ABS/ESP/ASR light on the W202's.

BAS Light & Coolant Light

Hi, Well I just had Mobilo guy come out to me because I had trouble starting my car and also because the BAS light came on.
He was absolutely amazing, confirmed the diagnosis as a faulty Brake Switch which solved the BAS problem - the cost for the part was £10.00 including VAT
He tested my battery which he said was knackered and said he was surprised it was still going as it`s the original 2002 battery, they normally last about 4 years or so. He fitted a new battery at a cost of £77.00 plus VAT and was guaranteed for 3 years. Because I have the car serviced by MB no labour charges were incurred.... so the whole lot came to just over £98.
I was quoted nearly £400 to get the BAS sorted by my local garage, when it came on previously, which they assured me that would be needed if the light came back on again after they`d switched it off!!! Then, whilst I was away from home a couple of weeks ago, I went to another garage because the Coolant light came on and they diagnosed the fault as the brake switch and would have charged me over £125 to fix it. No mention of topping up the Coolant!!!
My Garage obviously never topped my coolant up when they serviced it October last... anyway the nice man, a very, very nice man from Mobilo did it for me and obviously saved me £100`s in labour charges
Moral of my story - thank goodness for Mobilo AND those of you who are experiencing the BAS light coming on, or indeed any other flippin light... call out Mobilo.... they`ll do a systems check for free which can cost up to £100 at the garage

Had the same problem with all of my Mercs, always the bl**dy brake light switch. you would think that MB would have dealt with this problem by sourcing a decent switch supplier by now!

The GSF part number for that year is M93465 (W202 >99). Mine had a different part number as it's a 2000 model, ME9310020. Both £7.95 + VAT. Hope this helps.

Will be swapping mine this week hopefully.

Personally i didnt think ASR is going to do much good in this weather. ABS fair enough maybe but you really need ESP as ASR only really works on the rear wheels.

Well, that's it. Done. Switch changed. Dead easy job, took all of 15mins from first screw out to last one in. Been for a spin and no light on so fingers crossed.........

The second part number was definitely the one for the car by the way. Think there must have been a change after 99.
