Insurance companies on the offensive isn't entirely unreaonable as such (though it clearly was in your case - they were simply acting like chancres ).
Some years ago I crashes into a car I simply hadn't seen - my mind was not on the road at the time - and was apologetic and accepted liability etc. Later I learned from my insurer that it was not actually my fault - the reason I did not see the other driver was because he came out of a petrol station into the main road without bothering about right of way , which was in fact mine, so from the purly legal point of view it was his fault .
The point is that inspite of what the other driver might say at the scene, in the cold light of day the insurer might think differently.
