Billy's W124 Coupe Project

Hi Billy, any piccies of the back box fitted? How much more noisy is it? I've got both a NOS Lorinser and a used Remus but am at pains to cut the original exhaust up as its still the original one piece cat back factory fitted item! Don't want either to be noisy and mess up the refinement of the coupe but as they are both made by Sebring/ Remus I know they should sound similar to yours.

Remus does sound  hence why I went for one instead of the AMG
I can`t comment on the sound of the Lorinser one just yet but will do in about 6 months :thumb:

As for your exhaust, why not buy a used cat back one just to play about with

Did you cut out the front resonator box billy?

Yes mate, this has been removed.

Why not? The square tips suit the look of amg kit imo, assuming there will be a kit.

Affirmative, there will be a genII AMG kit going on but not in this phase of the project. I too think the round tips isn't going to go with the kit.

An option pointed out is to leave the rear box alone and when the time comes to put the kit on, get a back box made and weld the tips on.. (or just find a rear AMG back box).

Thing is, i could get addicted to the sound of this Sebring where as the AMG box is said to be quiet in comparison.

lets see how we get on.

In the mean time though Carat needs to update us with some fresh pics!! :bannana:

The Staggered setup..

On a different note,

I want to run a staggered set up on the coupe. 8J's up front as is and put on some 9J's at the rear.

In testing stages at the moment, but for the rear my tyre selection is a 235/40.

Early indication is that these fit on the car with no problems at all. Just need to see if the tyre size aesthetically ties in with the 215/40 up front. I think it will  Dont want the rear rubber looking bulkier.

..btw if anyone is wondering, the tyres aren't stretched like rubber bands! Its a subtle change well within boundaries set by recommended manufacturer fitment allowances. This Vs. the 'traditional' standard tyre fitment for 8 and 9J's. The aim is so the tyre doesn't overpower the alloy if you get my drift!

i'd say about a 1 and bit centimeters bigger 'dish' than the 8j's. Of course would love the dish of the OZ AMG split rims, but 17'' doesn't cut it for me.

A thanks to our Trapper John who kindly picked these up from Manchester for me on his way down to the official 124 day last year. Cheers bud.

Bear in mind the rolling circumference should be within 2.5% of each other
to avoid ABS problems.

Steeep!!

Cheers milo, asked him this week and he wants 400 for it!!

The seller has 2 listings for w124 AMG back boxes, and this one appears to be a no reserve auction, so my go for a reasonable price. Moot point if it's for a 4 banger, which would make sense as they seem to breaking a 220.

On another tangent, I saw a 300ce earlier today which had colour coded door handles and it looked very good. I think they may have been from a late r129? either way, it's not something I would have expected to work, but it looked worked very well.

Hi Billy,

Good to see such great progress on the car - would appreciate some new pictures of it - IMO the best stance on a W124 coupe I have seen! Have to look at pictures of your car every so often to get my fix...

RE fitting 9js on the rear - if you recall I done this with my coupe and had 235/45/18s on the rear - these rubbed under load. Im not sure if the 40 profile will allow enough clearance, and ill be interested to see if it does - bearing in mind the arches on my coupe have not been rolled.

Best Regards,

adil

Think i'll be sticking to the Sebring for now me thinks. I'd be inclined to get a box made if i'm honest. The Sebring will set the platform for deciding if i like the sound etc going forward.

..how about the handleless look? have them pop out doors operated with a fob?? nahhh!

It maybe me, but i find the design of the 124 door handle a fantastic design! Combined with the indent on the door to fit your hands around makes for a clean design. Infact as we all know, all the mercs around this era had this design consistency.

Thanks pal, 40 profile will help the issue under load. Natural negative camber and inward side wall profile and selection of tyre width plays a big part for arch clearance at the rear. This of course matters if you are pretty low.

Simple and most easiest/cheaper method for you i'd advise is get the arch lips rolled. £35 a corner??

These are double skinned and are quire rigid at the rear compared to the front wings. With someone who knows what they are doing with the arch rolling tool, the job should be a good'un. Be prepared to sign a disclaimer to say that the engineer isn't liable for any paint cracking/chipping on your paintwork - i was lucky no problems there.

These are the 18x8, i took a little while back. It should show what i meant about tyres not overpowering the look of the alloy in my previous post.

It also shows natural camber at the rear and the need for the tyres to be tucked away in my scenario given my ride height. This is the method I will be portray with the 9'js giving a better overall stance. That gap in the rear you can just about see should hopefully be no longer.

Go full AMG Exhaust system a la 3.2AMG, you already heard the sound

If you can find an NOS or good used condition AMG exhaust then that's the way to go.

Possibly easier to find a NOS TurboTechnics exhaust.

The TT exhaust note is more like the AMG..gives the I6 a V8 like rumble, not a raspy snap, crackle and pop 6 cylinder sound like many after market exhausts. ;)

Mazza's 3.2 AMG has possibly the best exhaust burble ive ever heard

Hi gents,

Curious for an update - hows it going?

Hi gents,

Curious for an update - hows it going?

Update coming asap as I've got a load of pics to post up, but need to get the camera to talk to the laptop as the pc is bust.:(

Anyway, the rocker cover and front anti roll bar have been powder coated and fitted. Looks stunning when you see it in person! All 4 brake calipers have been cleaned up and painted silver, the braided flexi hoses from HEL are also fitted on too. New discs and pads from zimmerman and mercedes complete the brakes.

On the rear axle I've fitted a pair of Mazza Racing lowering springs to help stiffen up the ride. The 9j rear wheels fit perfectly, and fill the wheel arch much better than the 8j's did. It looks like there wont be any tyre rubbing as Billys coupe has already had the arch lips rolled back.:thumb:

The front suspension had a set of lowering springs already fitted some time ago, however these are ment for a 4cyl engine and are struggling with the weight of the m104. We've had a play around with changing the spring pads for thicker items, which has helped but the car is still too soft on the front end. Today I'm going modify the old springs from the 320 donnor car and fit those in place till the boys get hold of some stiffer Mazza Racing springs.

The interior is yet to go back together as I want to test the wiring alterations are sound, aswell as things like the retro fitted ruise control work perfectly.

More tonight!

Just to add to the update, My Bilstein B8 shocks should be arriving this week hopefully so we'll be putting them onto the car at some point. This will assist with making the correct springs.

I'm really chuffed with the 9j outcome. People said it couldn't be done, i was damn sure it could! Just took a bit it of thought!

Feels good when people say it cant be done but you prove them wrong right?

To be honest mate I don't get into mix with trying to prove if something can be done when others think otherwise. Lots of folks will think they know better than someone else etc and so it goes on.

If anything, fitting this 9j on the back proves that my thinking was correct which makes me think if i have got this right what else have i got right??! Cuz i really do things on a whim!

It is indeed Mazza! Thoroughness, tremendous labour efforts and little attention to details..
