Billy's W124 Coupe Project

Question

We're swapping the speedo clock from the donor which will read the correct mileage for the engine being swapped.

My M111 220 lump had covered near 108k, this M104 320 is on 99k.

Previous MOT's will show the older mileage and going forward the M104 will show less than this.

Who is the correct party to inform of a mileage change? Would I need to inform anybody or not?

DVLA probably as you should tell them of the engine number change at the same time. Thats the way it used to be not sure now.

Hi, new guy here. I'm from Hong Kong and have recently taken over my dad's 92 320ce. looking to do the 36engine swap. might need a few tips and pointers :)

WDB knows a chap close to your shores with a rebuilt 3.6 engine...

wiring harness too... by the way, would i need to do any modifications to the wiring harness? I've got a c280 ecu with a c36 flash from oliver at speed tuning in usa

Start a new thread for your engine conversion or search the forum, theres lots of info about it

i will, once i get all the parts... problem is parts delivery from germany takes around 3 months, and right now, i've only got less than half of whats going in, therefore Im more on the side of watching and learning, until i got something to show. also included, a link of a pic of my car Photo by rx7withtimhui • Instagram

It might be worth trying to source the correct ECU if i'm honest..

look here:

German SPOB: CONTROL UNIT ENGINE - MERCEDES BENZ / VDO A0135451532 / 412.229/002/006 0135451532 412.229/002/006 412229002006 A0135451532

Is this an actual w124 E36 engine? Or is it from a W210 or W202 (c36)

Wouldnt the part number come up in EPC and show what car its for?

was trying to distinguish if the chap has an engine from a 210, w124 or a w202? :dk:

The website says it fits the e36 and the 320ce too... does that mean they share the same ecu?:dk:

i was reading on a forum that the best match for a c36 engine in a w124 is a c36 ecu

oh btw, i've placed an order with german spob two weeks ago for the whole rear axle subframe, and the front wheel bearings, seems to be a good company... but im still waiting for my shipment... we'll see

They're good for getting what you want agree - used them a few times.

..but a bit of a warning, make sure you order the right parts otherwise come dispute time they don't want to know!!

where has your E36 engine originated from?

we've talked about it through email, where i've given them my vin number just to make sure everythings right... hopefully it'll turn out that way.

the c36 engine, transmission, and rear diff came from a doner car that got hit in the rear in Hong Kong

c36s are pretty common here, i'm not sure if it is in the UK

btw, my jehnert speakers just came in today...
cant wait to get my car done... and to try them out

The ECU just sounds to be the missing link then :thumb:

There could be possible other trickery to make the engine work correctly without using the intended ECU but i'd be inclined in sourcing one as the last thing you want is problems down the line.

Ask SPOB if thy have a C36 ECU? The one i posted was a W124 one. If you have the donor VIN number that would be good to supply them with.

On another note, I believe the prop shafts will be different. The coupe ones are shorter as we found out vs w124 saloon. Not sure the differences vs a W202 though. I suspect you may find they differ...?

i got a c280 ecu flashed to c36 info at speedtuning in USA, and have double checked with the technican there that it will work,

chose them since they were the most recommended ecu place at the usa mb forums. also, they do have the experience on this. also... hope its fine...

also, on the prop shafts, this is actually the first time i'm coming across this.... what can i do if they are shorter? and any other people tried?
thanks for bringing it up, you might have just saved me a whole lot of time :)

Actually just re read your first post, you have a 320 so you might actually be fine!

I'm pretty sure you wont be needing to change the prop shafts. The prop shaft couplings however may need to be looked at to adapt to the C36?

more advices from fellow c124 mates would be better on this... but i do appreciate the pointer there... new info obtained.

propshaft couplings... i'll have to do more research....
this is really my first time working on this car... and my first european car ever
