Billy's W124 Coupe Project

This is the closest example i can find on the net for a visual. An Azurite blue coupe with AMG GEN II and 9j's. It looks fab.

Some of you may know this was for sale a while back on eclectic cars.

In my opinion, The GEN II AMG rear bumper looks better without a ducktail. Gives the rear of the coupe a clean bold look.

The GEN I has a more pronounced and 'sharper' looks which fits in with the ducktail. Gen II is more subtle looking.

Man - I remember lusting over this car on eclectic cars a few years ago

Billy's, Billies!

So the B8 Shocks arrived yesterday. Top job from Regals Motorsport online they are official stockists. 3 day delivery straight from Bilstein themselves.

Word on the street, they've already been installed on the car!

In my opinion, the Ducktail is not visually appealing if you're using the rear bumper with the long impact strip.

I agree. I think amg never intended duck tail to fit on a facelift. This is from pdf file with all amg part numbers - Due to shape of 94-95 rear deck lid with handle, there is no factory Gen 2 spoiler.

Indeed they have, things are getting very colorful in the wheel arches.

Front..

Rear...

The m104 is a heavy old lump, so these b8 shocks should keep things in check. Those and the Mazza Racing springs have firmed up the ride nicely, the car will feel much more planted now.

This is the ride height at the rear with the 9j alloys fitted...

The ride height at the front still needs to be raised by a few mm, but the boys are going to do maths and measurements for a new set of springs tomorrow...

Excuse the crappy pics, it was raining when I took those!

So this is the correct rocker cover from Billy's engine, just after I got it bak from the powder-coaters...

And yes those are clouds you can see reflecting in the center part...

Billy also bought me a electrically adjustable steering column, so that's gone in too.

The old and new side by side...

More tonight...

..think i've just reached cloud 9!

That valve cover will make a huge difference when you look under the bonnet. Very nicely done indeed! :thumb:

You did seem rather happy Wednesday, must be all that car talk.:thumb:

I think Wednesday's happiness was due to something else..hahaha

cars was the last thing on your minds on wednesday..hehehe

Indeed! :D

Just speaking to mazz, and the plan of action tomorrow is to get to your's early-ish do all the prep to get it weighed up for spring info.

I'll take the alloy's back with me and get them refurbished.

The rocker cover is looking seriously fantastic  I think i'll need to get the merc badge on the front plastic cover painted in chrome to match. I think that will finish the look.

Brake calipers are looking spot on too, you havn't changed the rear brake disks yet?

...Later down the line when we change all the rear links and front control arms/steering linkages etc, those dust plates are getting ditched - why do they go so bad?!

The rear height is a result Simon :thumb:

Although difficult to really visualize what we are dealing with from the pics 100%, early indication looks like we almost there. The 9J's are sitting nicely in the arches. Running on a 3 nib shim pad at the moment on the rears gives us plenty of room for improvement if we need later.

As mazz pointed out once the car has settled if i wanted to adjust the height lower i can swap them out. for a 2 nib or even a 1nib. we'll get the full picture of what we're dealing with tomorrow.

I agree with the front being raised ever so slightly. If only the standard 124 arches were round it would be perfect :(

The final height in the front will need to be 'sitting' just couple of mm above the tyre. As the arch isn't round the tyre is slightly being cut off.

Billy, you really need to watch that front bumper if you were to fit it

very true dash...i'll cross the bridge when it's time. But tbh i don't have much of a choice its not like i can 'adjust' it lol!

Being as you've gone to all that trouble, that's exactly what you should have.

Adjustable ride height suspension adjustable by electrical control on dash.

There are various systems around - doesn't the 190 gen two have it ?

Ok panel, I dont want to detract too much from billys project, but as there was mention of W124 exhaust's a few pages back, thought id ask for some quick opinions here....

Want to get my (recently aqcuired) AMG back box fitted to my E220 cab, but I know the rest of the exhaust is on its very last legs.....

How much is a reasonable price for a custom stainless steel exhaust from the downpipe onwards (about where those heat shields that always rattle are located), retaining the cat on the car, new silencer (the one after the cat), some more custon work and then connecting to my AMG back box ??

TIA

PS: Billy, those Bilsteins are the absoloute mutts...

Everyones prices will be different, you'll need to ring around a few places. You might have to take your car to someone to see how much work is involved and they can quote you from that. I doubt many places will know exactly what to do on a 124 and quote you over the phone.

Could help you there but it seems someone gets upset about NSV having a potential customer lol

You can use a roller which angled right will push the top part of the front arch out forming more of a circular arch. Ive seen it done on a few 124's from the german club fitted with wider tyres and they dont look bad at all. Takes a lot of time and patience to do mind, but extremely hard to do on the rear.

The problem solver really would be going all out and getting adjustable coilovers fitted!! Big work involved with that I believe. Plenty of strengthening to mounting points where the top mounts go and I'm sure some other major mods.

As much as I would like a round arch, I don't want to detract away from the original shape. Spend a little time looking at them in various angles and you'll see how beautifully MB have shaped them.... Especially the rears.

^ Thats fair if you dont want to detract from the original shape. Are your arches rolled in as much as it they will go from the inside or do you still have more room to go further in? Ive seen 9.5Jx18 tuck in there nicely, but barely just with about a credit cards width between the wheel and the arch, but I think that depends on the ET of the wheel.
