Been meaning to suggest this for a while - small scale affair, evening or Sunday afternoon type of thing, venue - pub with a suitable car park (size depends on interest of course), date - let's start with Sunday July 27th?

Any takers?

Would probably come over to a Bristol one, but pretty busy at weekends at the moment ... definitely can't make the 27th.

Any local interest?

All are welcome of course (I suppose it's normal that those with furthest to come arrive first ;) ).

Am I right in thinking there's nothing based in Bristol then - I'm new to the forum.

Plenty of Bristolians here - sadly most us are boring old farts who don't get out much. Having said that SWMBO is away the first week in October. :D

Would be up for a weekend afternoon meet, subject to date.

I would probably come along. Counting myself as one of the Bristol-based BOFs referred to, I don't know the pubs that well, particularly ones with decent sized car parks. Are there any suggestions? In fact, leaving the GTG aside, can anyone recommend some pubs in the Bristol/Bath area that do a decent sunday roast?

The Willy Wicket, a Traditional Country Pub in Downend, Bristol.

Chain pub in a converted farmhouse - technically not what I'd call a "Traditional County Pub", but nevertheless not a bad place.

For something more authentic, how about the Crown at Kelston, the Swan at Swinford, the Ship at Keynsham, Carpenters Arms at Stanton Prior, the Bull at Hinton.

For a GTG a venue close to Hambrook or the ring road would be a good idea for a wider catchment (like the Willy Wicket in fact, anyone think of anything in Winterbourne)?

What about the White Lion
in Frenchay.
By the common behind the hospital
Good food & drinks
Very easy for me to get too :D

The Whie Lion is ok for pub food, but nothing to write home about (ie my last meal was disappointing:D ). It's one we occasionally go to for lunch on a friday, as they serve up the food quite quickly (I work at the Hospital). It's more of a summer pub though, as it's got quite a lot of seating out the back, but is not so roomy inside. It also does not have that much parking space, but it is in a nice location.

The Harvester on Frenchay Park Road is not very nice (even by Harvester standards) . Not sure about Winterborne. One of the pubs there is an Indian restaurant, and one of the pubs in Hanbrook is a Chinese restrauant, which does have quite a bit of parking.

I quite like the Downend idea, especially if they do a nice roast:) .

I tried out the Willy Wicket in Downend this sunday. Went for the roast, which would have been reasonnable by pub roast standards, were it not luke-warm/half-cold. I had turkey, which was ok, but my partner had pork, which looked like a couple of bacon rashers: she was not impressed. They also had only one person on the bar, so it took a while to order/pay.

Overall, I'm not in a hurry to eat there again, although it did have the kind of car park that would make it suitable for a GTG.

Can anyone recommend any other other North Bristol/South Gloucestershire pubs to try out for sunday lunch? I like roasts, but just think they take far too long to cook myself.

A couple in post 14 - the Bull at Hinton is probably closest to you (although I haven't been there are a while now, things may have changed).

Someone said +ve things about the White Lion at Frenchay to me the other day (see Merc-c's post)

The White Lion is ok, and overall their pub roast is probably better than the Willy Wicket. In terms of somewhere for a forum meet though, I think the limited parking at the White Lion is less than ideal, as everyone will be turning up in a car. It's fine for lunchtime/post work trips from the hospital, as we bundle four people into a car.

I will try out the Bull at Hinton, as it is not one I have heard of before. Thanks for the suggestion.
