Hi, my friendly independent advised me the f/o/s coil cup spring has corroded, Merc dealership does not want to know so I am going to get independent to book it in to a workshop they use - quote is £300 in VAT, so just want to know if this is about right?
(Merc E280 Petrol 1999 Saloon)
Anyone got any comparison costs?

Thanks
Chris.

Hi, it broke on way to body shop to get it fixed! £271 in end as needed new rubber spring mount. N/s was fine apparently! Thanks all. I have some pics if anyone interested I will post up so easier to show newbies like me.

Very interesting. You would think that if it was going to rust it would have gone years ago not now. Also evidence of rust adjacent to the break, so I have checked mine and this rust is not apparent so...fingers crossed. Thanks for the photos.

Lift up the sealant ;)

It's not broken, nor indeed cracked. It was poor application of the sealant which led to the problems some ( not all ) are having.

Thats why I got shot of my Mercedes body rot and springs this forum is full of owners with these problems disgusting for an expensive quality car.

I had both of these on mine OK yes 9 years old but my Lexus is 10 years old and there is no body rot or rust round the springs so a better quality car in all respects,I know you guys are going to protect your image of the Mercedes but very glad to get shot of mine as that was the third one I have had and I always had my wallet out.

Those Photos look like the old Vauxhalls of the early sixties (Rust boxes)

I'll tell anyone how crap the 1996- cars are and I'll not buy another one. Shame really how Mercedes let accountants decide the quality.

Ahhh, the dreaded W210 spring collapse issue. I asked Autospec how much they'd charge to have both sides completely removed and replaced (just out of interest really), £400 per side was the quoted figure, but this included new cups, springs and associated gubbins.

They also said that they mostly see passenger sides that are affected. I'm guessing this is due to the passenger side being the side most commonly found trawling along the gutter area of the road side, so getting the majority of the splash back.
