changed the oil on my c180 2.0 2003 estate yesterday, all fine but this morning engine light on !a sign came up saying something like engine oil level not check when running, whatever that means, anyway message has stayed of since just engine check light ,any ideas please

oil is near upper end of scale when cold:thumb:

These cars have an onboard level check instigated from the steering wheel buttons.

Engine must be at running temp. Car must be dead level. With engine off. Test then takes a few minutes to run.

If your engine has a dipstick, then the correct amount of oil is when the oil level is just under the max mark when the engine is hot.

If it's near the max mark when cold, then you have too much oil in the engine

It should be roughy around half way between min and Max when cold.

As above.

Check your oil after engine has run up to temp, and been shut off for 5 mins to get a clear reading.

If it's at max when cold, you've overfilled. It may have been coughed into the intake and fouled the MAF.

Also.. if your car is equipped with an electronic oil level check, then the message is correct: it can't check the oil level while the engine is running, so repeat the oil level check with the engine switched off.

sorry for not responding earlier, when I got the car ,I was getting the message that the oil was over filled.thats why I decided to change it anyway ,because as I stated before ,history is meant to be coming from previous owner!,so no idea when oil was last done, although it was clean looking.i have looked in the inlet pipe and yes there is oil residue there ,I suspect from previous over fill but eml didn't come on until the day after the oil change!,i have checked it hot since I changed it,and it was just under the full line,so I will clean the maf tomorrow,,,,i tried my obd 11 to check for faults, but it would not read!will I have to take it somewhere to have eml turned off? also there is a message saying 11,500 miles since last service ,or words to that affect ,cant remember exactly ,old age lol,how can I reset this, thanks steve
