C350e anyone considering one?

9500 miles edges of tyre perfect centre was down to 1.6.

That suggests they're over inflated, so you are running on a rugby ball shaped point in the centre. You should get an even wear rate across the tread. Might be worth checking on your next ones. :thumb:

LHD C350e AMG

I am searching for a new C350e Estate AMG in the UK but has to be a LHD,
Does anyone know if they can be ordered ? And if so, where...

Hi All
This is my first post, recently joined the group.

Supposedly taking delivery this Thursday after several delays, ordered my Standard C350e estate in black back in mid Feb. It had issues a couple of weeks ago with a oil leak found during inspection which although repaired leaves me a bit concerned - has anyone else had similar issues?

Also been reading the posts regarding connect me services, does anyone know what the standard C350e comes with as the PDF manual I have from early this year suggests the Pre-entry climate control is part of the standard package, this is the bit I really want!

Pre-entry by key will work without Me but you will need me to activate it by phone remotely. I use key even though I have Me as it is just easier to do than to schedule each time. Unlock car, locknit again wait 10mins - everything nice and warm/cool.

I have the standard model and use my Mercedes Me login via the mobile website to set pre-entry climate control.

As an extra, the service also monitors tyre (or "tire") pressures, brake linings, brake fluid, [low voltage] battery levels, coolant, washer fluid and whether the doors are shut and locked. No oil check though...

Bit sketchy this but had a busy Monday , on my desk this morning was a copy of Business Car magazines so had a quick read. I think it was a leasing company that was removing the C350E from it's list due to " mechanical problems and poor economy. Will try and find the article.

Sorry about the "mechanical problems" part, just scanned over the article quickly.

It's had enough electrical problems although I'd have thought Mercedes would be picking a lot of them up under warranty terms.

The key phrase from that article is this bit:

"While plug-in vehicles have their benefits, any organisation considering running one must look beyond the claimed fuel economy figures and at their usage profile," said British Vehicle Rental and Leasing Association chief executive Gerry Keaney. "They are at their most efficient when they can be used in electric mode, and if a company car driver is going to be on the motorway travelling long distances, the fuel savings may not be as substantial as the company had hoped."

Anyone ploughing the motorway is not going to get the benefit of one, and that is the danger of just presenting a company car driver with a list of CO2 figures, and no background info.

My commute between home and work is 12 miles and i can charge at the home and work (currently) so real benefits for me.

Has anyone done a comparison on cost per mile between petrol and electric when using hybrid vehicles like ours.

It seems to me that the average MPG is somewhere between 45 and 60 dependant on usage / charging etc.. But what is our true cost with elec?

I worked it out when looking and found it didn't really save me any money, just you get more power and lower BIK benefits. But I would be charging at home.

My economy 7 electricity costs 5.3p per kWh. I can use 90% of the 6.2kWh battery to do about 10 miles. 5.3x0.9x6.2/10= 3p per mile.

Fuel is £1.10 per litre or £5 per gallon. Call it 40 mpg on petrol only and the cost per mile is 12.5p per mile.

Trouble is, I don't know how many miles I do on electric. The 25% of my miles I do with the "engine off" isn't that helpful, because I'd still do a large proportion of those miles if I didn't plug in. Maybe take half of it?

12.5p per mile for 87.5% of the time and 3p per mile for 12.5% of the time is 11.3p per mile. There's going to be a huge variation between people who drive half or more of their miles on electric and people who do no miles on electric at all.

I was thinking about an i3 as our run around car, and to be honest I was surprised at how much, or little, you actually saved.

It worked out around £3.00 for 60 miles, some of the really economical cars of the same size cost about £3.75 for the same mileage in fuel.

Which was fine, but I would have needed a new electricty meter fitting in my garage and would have to pay the daily tariff which would have brought it to around the same price each day.

The C350e saved me around 10% in running costs compared to say a C200, but only around 2% in overall running costs when you look at depreciation, servicing, tyres, insurance etc. etc.

I think overall the Merc is only saving me about 1-2p per mile and that's only because I don't pay for charging at work.

But I had a pretty economical Honda Civic 1.6 i-DTEC before which returned 61mpg average over 3 years.

So still a little saving but as a company car driver you then factor in that currently it's a £45 a month saving in tax too and I'm driving a Mercedes instead of a Honda.

I have averaged 45mpg over 12k in the last year. I have driven it the same as I did my CLS 350 diesel and I doubt I achieved 35mpg in that. The 0-60 is about the same so quite a fast car for achieving 45mpg. I expect the residual to be higher as it is petrol and once the market appreciates the hybrid system is warranted for up to 5 years that should help.

47mpg over 14,000 miles in the last 7 months. Still on original tyres though rears down to 4-3mm.

My reasons for getting the 350e were simply that I wanted to see what the practicalities were in having a car that requires charging. I do a fair amount of long distance driving but once I get to my destination I'll spend the rest of the week there. So normal mpg on motorways but practically all electric once I'm at work wherever that may be in the country. Choices were 350e, BMW 330e (with a bloody 9 month wait) or the Mitsubishi Outlander.
My long term plan is to get an all electric car with a Tesla range. Perhaps even the new Tesla that comes out in 2017/2018 but in the meantime I get to see what it's like to have a plugin without all the associated range anxiety I would have with the other all electrics on the market. So not too bothered with how much I save. So long as its not costing more than a diesel I'm happy as this is a just a proof of concept for me. (hence the 3 year lease)

MB have invited me to a C350e Market Research event this weekend which has brought the inner geek out in me as I thought I'd analyse how the car has performed from an efficiency perspective so that it's green credentials could be discussed based on facts.

I've had the car for 13 months and use it to commute to work every day, which is a 36mile round trip. We do use it for longer journeys, but I have learnt that the ICE is not efficient so we tend to use our diesel vehicle for those longer trips.

I had planned to leave the trip computer for 12months without resetting it in order to keep a running tab on the numbers, but unfortunately the car suffered from the water ingress in the wiring loom which resulting in me using the ICE only for several weeks which really affected the numbers due to the poor mpg of the ICE. So these numbers are from the reset which happened at 6,265miles, but I have pro-rata'd the numbers up to create results based on my total milage to date(14,605miles).

I charge the car every night at home and occasionally charge at work. I don't have a seperate at work as I charge it off the 13amp circuit, so I have used an assumed cost.

Prior to having the C350e I had a BMW 530d Mspt, the average MPG was circa 33-35. Given that the C350e is a higher performance car I am pleased with the results, with the BIK being another bonus. My only disappointment is that the predicted electric range is overly optimistic and the external temperature plays a more significant part in the range than I had expected.

What these numbers do show is how poor the ICE is when used on its own.

Total mileage to date - 14,605 (av 1,123miles/month)

Since last mileage reset due to water ingress
Total mileage - 8,340
Electric mileage - 4,492 = 53.86%
ICE mileage - 3,848 = 46.14%
Combined MPG - 55.3

Applied to current total mileage
Total electric mileage - 14,605 @ 53.86% = 7,866
Total ICE mileage - 14,605 @ 46.14% = 6,739

kWh used at home - 2,148 @ 10.24p = £219.95
Assumed electric cost at work assumed = £40
Total electric cost = £259.95 (£19.99 per month)

Cost per mile on electric = £259.95/7,866 = 3.3p / mile

Actual ICE mpg - Hybrid MPG 55.3 less 53.86% (electric) = 25.5mpg ICE

Average Petrol price/litre over 13 month period - £1.10/ltr or £5.00/gallon

Cost per mile on ICE = £5.00 / 25.5mpg = 19.60p / mile
Total Petrol cost - 6,739 x 19.60p = £1,320.84 (£101.60 per month)

Total Hybrid fuel costs over 14,605miles =
Total Hybrid cost - £259.95 + £1,320.85 = £1,580.80 or 10.82p / mile

Hi @Saxon6,

We get a very similar end result from totally different calculations. A couple of questions:
1. Armed you using the "engine-off" reading to calculate your electric miles? If so, I think your ICE mpg is much better than you say, because engine-off includes coasting and breaking as well as "electric motor on"
2. If you're planning to stick with some sort of plug-in car, can you get an economy7 tariff? 90% of my charging is done overnight at 5p per kWh. Even if I fully charge every night it would only cost £9 per month
