C350e anyone considering one?

Ran out of Fuel, AND charge last night.
I knew I was running low on Petrol (had about 50 miles). did a short journey and when I switched on, the message was something like battery power only, but I didn't have any!! got about 1 mile before the car actually stopped. I was thinking that I would have to walk to the petrol station, but switched off, switched on again and the engine kicked in....

There was some discussion on this earlier in the thread (or the other one)

Seemingly once the petrol level gets very low, the car goes into limp home electric only mode (even if you have none!). IIRC it persisted after a fill up in someones case.

I've only had my last bar flashing, rather than go out completely so not had this myself.
As you say, luckily it seems a off/on fixes it.

So.. despite having a 330E Beemer for a demo at the weekend & really rather enjoying the drive (the inside trim on the demo was gopping though - tan & orange ambient light combo clash ! See attached pic) I've ordered yesterday a C350E without even a test drive (& won't get one until January) due to having to order a new car thru Leaseplan by the end of November.

Nice spec

How much was an equivalent 330e if I may ask?

Cheers :) I wasn't going to go for the HUD but realised driving the 330E what a faff it is switching between modes (it has Eco / Comfort / Sport & then 3 settings within Eco) & taking my eyes off the road, and that's without looking at other items (changing media / radio stations / nav etc), the HUD really helped.

It's difficult to get an exact like for like on the 330E to C350E because more or less every thing on a BM is an option but attached is a quote I had from Leaseplan from a few weeks back.. based on that it would be net / net about a ton cheaper a month than the Merc but I specc'd the C350E right up so not exactly apples / apples/

BMWs are beautiful to drive, but even in black and white, that cabin would look like something from the 1980s. I assume it's like that as a stark reminder that you'll really regret not forking out for a premium audio system?

Exactly that :D

I thought Demos were specc'd to max to entice potential buyers with their shiny shiny gadgets... not so BMW.. they shove in the worst trim so you are are forced to spec up to avoid comparisons from cars on Life On Mars

The drive is bloody lovely though.. especially in Sport when a decent boot kicks it down 2 cogs with a satisfying clunk, clunk & a surge of speed & noise :rock::bannana:

Just forked out £672 on a set of winter tyres today

need to keep this car working in all conditions this winter that fit

I have my car on charge overnight at the house, with pre-heat on (for these lovely cold mornings!) when I get in the car the battery is on approx 85% with only 11 miles range remaining. So im assuming the car is using the battery to heat the car instead of using mains power even though it is still plugged in?? is this normal?? seems a bit daft to me!

@mhaldron
Do you have a wall mounted charger or do you use the 3-pin plug charger that came with the car?
I've got the wall mount and it charges the car whilst it's on pre-heat, so I get a nice warm toasty car and a full charge.

I have a 3 Pin.

I think you need to start pre-heat 45 Mins before you leave as after pre-heat it will take 30 mins to get back on full charge.

I noticed the last 2 days that the engine starts immediately when i get into the car even on a full charge for 30 seconds even when I change to E-Mode. I guess it needs it for some start up reason in very cold weather.

I'm on a 3 pin charger and I am slowly advancing my departure time to see what I can get away with. Seems to be about 30 minutes. i.e. if you want to leave at 7.00, set your departure time to 6.30. You should get a defrosted car and 100%.

I've had the engine start-up too on a couple of really cold mornings. Makes you jump!

thanks for that, will try it tonight, mine also started straight away yesterday, thought it was broke!!!

I am so pleased that I managed to get 4 miles on a full charge this morning after pre-heating.
Getting about 26 mpg on the way to work as tried to charge on route so that I can pre-heat before I leave the office tonight!!!

It depends on how cold it is. A decent frost and soak at -3C all night means even on the 16a dedicated charger, it's not back at 100% at departure time. I've taken to setting two departure times - one at 06:45 and one at 07:00 which means the car is nicely defrosted, warm and fully charged!

I think the engine starts up straight away for 30s or so when it's that cold so that if you pull away later and immediately boot it, it's not the first start-up of the day..

Todays departure....

Outside temperature at home -7c
07:05 - Plug in at 13A, set pre-climate turning off passenger heated seat
07:53 - Depart with 79% charge but a nice warm car with clear screens

19.5 mile journey with 10 miles engine off, Glowing circle for most of the route until I hit a lot of roundabouts near the office, 53.3mpg equivalent.

I wonder how much the charge would have been down without being plugged in, i'm thinking 50-60%.

That sounds familiar.

I had a 330e M-Sport on demo a couple of weeks ago. Real fun to drive but as an all rounder maybe not so good.

Ordered a 350e through Leaseplan this week though so just waiting on my 'dealer spec check call'.

Hi all, my mercy will be deliver next week . Very excited!!

However are there any issues that I need to look out for?

Also it seems like everyone is talking about the car being thirsty! Is it true and how bad it is?

Thanks

Depends on your driving style and trip details. Long, fast trips could be lower than 40mpg. Short trips could be electric only. My last tank of petrol did 80mpg, but that was by far my highest - 55mpg is more typical.
