C350e owners club

I've gone for a Rolec tethered unit mostly for the practicality aspect. Messing with the plug in brick isn't ideal and the layout of the drive doesn't really lend itself to some of the solutions I've seen.

That said, I opted for a 32A unit as you never know what might follow the C350e onto the driveway in the future.....

I accept that most of the companies doing installs are just taking the piss and pocketing most of the £500 grant for nothing, but it still works out cheaper for me than doing it DIY.

I've found a localish company (up in Bolton) 'Smart Power Electrical Ltd'. Standard setup is £200 for a 32amp Rolec. More than I need now but with my wife's car changing next year (and her daily mileage being pretty low) might well be worth a look.

I'd hate to find the rules change *again* and have to pay the full cost for one.

Mainly I'm marking time till April. My current car is getting very rough round the edges but I'm nursing it along ;-)

The call started off hopeful with talk of replacing it but then they insisted I book the whole car in :(

I'm hoping when I get there and can demonstrate it going on and off even when not connected to the vehicle it will mean they don't need to waste time poking about with the car!

Took my car in today, explained the issue with the charge back going on and off when you move the wire to the guy there and he agreed it was the pack but they need to inspect the vehicle for all warranty claims.

So worked from there for 90 mins with free wifi and hot drinks, pleasant enough.

They're ordering a new pack in which they say will be there tomorrow or Wednesday and then I can either collect or have it couriered to me, have kept the dodgy one for now as so far it's still working with some cable wiggling.

My colleague at work says 3 pin charge pack is doing the same and this is her 2nd one so feels like an inherent issue with these type of packs, I think the cable lengths are too short as often they get slung in through windows etc and the Mercedes one in particular has a very short pack to plug lead which in most sockets would mean it hangs.

Ironically in my setup it sits on the floor doesn't hang, I even stuck some rubber feed on the bottom so it sits in place but the pack has done over 400 charges now I think as I used to use it twice daily, now at work it's a proper charge point so I only use it at home or sometimes in hotels, holiday lodges etc.

Filled up on way back, lowest mpg so far during ownership, 54.3mpg with engine off for 50% of the time, so still not bad.

Just wondering if I should change my order to include the assist package...

My Premium+ saloon with the assist package arrived last week (ordered in September) and having done over 700 miles since I would definitely recommend the assist package. The Distronic Plus, Active Blind Spot Assist, Active Lane-Keeping Assist make motorway driving an absolute pleasure and a lot safer, though they may prove of less value if you don't drive on motorways or dual carriageways much.

Congratulations, I got mine last week and I am sure you will love it. The only thing I have noticed is that the wind/road noise at motorway speeds is worse than the VW CC it replaced, however with the Burmester on you don't really notice it :D

An interesting read, however the 'Pwer (HP) combined' figure is given as 205 , so I rather hope this is a misprint :fail

Thats kw, combined system bhp is 275 (even though engine is 211 and electric motor is 82)

I don't think the wind / road noise is excessive driving at speed.

There was one typo I spotted. Based on info I've seen for the engine, they transposed the torque figures. The M274 ICE makes 350Nm from 1200 rpm. They squeeze a bit more power out of it in the C300 as well.

I'm still hoping to see a dyno plot for the combined system one day.

I spent an idle moment earlier comparing the new BMW 330e offering with the C350e. Seems that they are pretty similar in most respects but the Merc shades it in terms of overall power and performance where the BMW has a couple extra real electric miles range. Price-wise, once you spec up the BMW, I reckon it costs a bit more. And the slam dunk for me is the Beemer is saloon only, I have the estate C350e. Smugness retained for now.

There was a suggestion that the 330e retains the BMW driveability so I could concede it might be a bit better behaved round corners but presumably it still weighs in at near 2 tonnes like the C350e.

And, for completeness, the Volvo V60, Audi eTron and Golf GTE all come in with less performance, a bit more range again and, in the case of the (diesel) Volvo, a much heftier price. I drove the eTron last week and its more of a practical pure electric commuter car and generally more economic but not a patch on the Merc in terms of comfort, style or sheer power.

The advantages I could see of the 330e were the lower tax (regardless of spec) and the peachy 8-speed ZF box. Our 7-speed is a bit clunky compared. But the lack of an estate really goes against it, and I think the 350e has a much better interior. I also think the location of the charging point is in a really inconvenient place on the 330e. It needs to be on the front or the back of the car, but they've stuck it on the front wing!

Just picked my car up from its first service and there is a new bulletin released this morning to replace the plug in connection and cable to the hybrid charging system. Unfortunately not released early enough to order the parts but they are contacting me once they have the parts. I asked if this was due to the moisture ingress problem but the dealer was unaware of that issue and it is not mentioned in the bulletin.

Overall the level of service from Mercedes Benz in Epsom was fantastic, I can highly recommend them for anyone in the area. I also received a video walk through of the condition of the underside of the car from the technician working on it this morning.

As an aside, I have no real noticeable wind noise at speed from the drivers door so issue could be down to a bad batch of door rubbers/misalignment or similar.

Do you know if that is going to be a general recall, or only if someone complains about it?

Wind noise - my car suffers from it. The dealer didn't think it did, but asked me to keep an eye (ear) on it. It's especially noticeable in cross winds. It sounds like the window is open fractionally.

Has to be a 'program' surely? There's clearly a fundamental component problem with the connector & cable that allows water to make its way right to the charger if left to its own devices so it's in their interest to get them sorted sooner rather than later.

Might be worth contacting the dealer about this one.

Apropos the 330e, we tried one and although it was nice enough, it didn't feel special like the C350e does. Arguably a better drive but we are happy with the MB.

Likewise. I had both on test for a few days and found the 330e fun to drive but the C350e just felt more special. The BMW was a nice car but the Merc had the edge as an all rounder.

There was also the fact the my better half found the BMW made her rather queasy.
