Handover with MB Salisbury went just fine yesterday morning, and in the beautiful sun I headed off on a 300 mile round trip to get some first impressions.
In the sunlight the magnetite black colour works really nicely, and the black/red interior combo sets if off perfectly. I've taken plenty of pics so will post some up soon, but a few thoughts on early days (literally) of ownership.
Firstly running in. For the first 1000 miles the instructions are to keep below 85mph (not that difficult) and 4500rpm. The second part can be tricky if you select the more aggressive shift options (Sport or Sport+) on the rotary controller. In Comfort the box slushes around like a conventional auto and pace is smooth and rapid enough while never really troubling the tacho. It holds gears longer and shuffles up to 6th as quickly as possible for mooching around in.
Problem is, if you go with Sport+ in particular the whole character changes and the engine revs much more freely and with a much faster throttle response. First couple of tries with a moderate poke the revs were zipping around to nearly 5.5k before I even noticed. I think leaving it in comfort for the rest of the first 1000 miles is in order, if I can resist temptation.
And the temptation is the noise and the thrust. Talk about Jekyll and Hyde between C and S+!
One thing I have noticed is that the big V8 kicks out a lot of heat, with accompanying oily smells as the "newness" burns off.
Also, a note on the fuel consumption. I know it was going to be a thirsty car, but the difference between short hops/town driving and longer motorway hauls is stark. Although over the first 325 miles she has returned 17.2mpg, 250 of these miles have been on a motorway, where the consumption crept over 20 (20.1 to be precise). On a 21 mile, mostly 30-40mph urban trip last night I saw 8.8 mpg. Ouch. Engine should loosen up as it beds in and I would hope to be able to get the 20mpg I was expecting in time.
Otherwise everything is tickety-boo. The speed responsive steering works well, although there is a little more play in the straight-ahead on a motorway than I would like. On twistier roads and in town driving the steering is meaty and full of feel, and the whole car is beautifully balanced to resist understeer during more sweeping corners.
Of course I need to control my obsessive/compulsive disorder and not stop the car to grab a sponge every time another bug throws itself at the windscreen...
Will put up some pics shortly, and put up another report of salient points as the running in period continues. hopefully I can get the next 700 miles or so polished off in a couple weeks and can start exploring the depth of ability and performance a little more
