with so many c63s lately i was wondering what your experiences are into running the car in .....
ive just recently got mine done 450miles so far at 50..... :rock:lol... im to afraid to go over until the 1000 miles.... im sure im just a coward......

how have you guys run your cars in

also with the settings i was wondering what the m mode is is this a complete maual setting rather then c or s

sorry for posting a c63 question

MY GOD!! you are KILLING that car!

in a nutshell, dont allow revs to drop too low and the engine labour, dont be scared to give it the beans but dont hold it flat out (rev wise) constantly. vary the engine speed whenever possible and sensible, this beds everything in at ALL rev ranges and by giving it the beans, seals the rings to the bores better! ive seen an article on this somewhere which backs up my theory. cant remember where it is though

there should be a sticker on the windscreen re running in
a few things
stay below 85mph
no kickdown
no full throttle
stay below 3500rpm
watch AMG display - take things very easy until oil temp reaches 84degrees
leave it in comfort mode
very very gentle for first 1000 miles
tip toe on the brakes too
full ESP on
oh by the way with just 2500 rpm in each gear and a quarter throttle opening you will still be flying
enjoy:D

that will prevent the rings bedding in properly though. i'll see if i can find the article i was talking about

try looking here. http://www.mototuneusa.com/break_in_secrets.htm i must admit, i dont know about using mineral oil, but the rest is the way ive always done it, and had NO PROBLEMS whatsoever!

Pete you obviously know better than AMG

This is a hot potato....some say gently does it - others say give it beans to bed in rings etc....

Good advice above Pagzzy but as Mika says, there should be stickers on the windscreen telling you how to run the car in.

I said to you before as has Turbopete that you shouldn't keep her at a constant speed at 50 otherwise you could suffer piston glazing, you should take her through the rev range but don't hold it there and don't take her over 4500. Cars that have been run in probably give out a higher BHP reading and makes a difference in the pull away speed, right the way through the whole rev range. I am no expert and I am sure there is better advice that will come along but sure all will say that you shouldn't hold it at 50 all the time, you are not running the engine in properly.

Yes he does because take it easy for the first 1000 miles is insane advice for any engine  Cars that have been run in properly give higher bhp ? no they don't the other way around. Do you ever run a AMG race engine in? No straight out of the pits and into race mode. I agree constant speed glazes the bores and don't red line it but driving it like Miss Daisy will do it no good at all.

look at the link i posted in my earlier post.

ive rebuilt plenty of engines over the years (ford admittedly) and also used the same method on brand new cars we have had in the family. all have been GREAT!!

mines ***ed then

Probably :dk: I'm with Pete we've been building and seen destroyed race engines for the last 30 years, In Rally Cars, F1 Stock Cars, saloon cars, drift cars. We specialise in performance engine rebuilding and people come from all over Europe because of our V8 knowledge for race engines. There are limits for how to treat a new engine but you have to be sensible why would you nurse it in a performance car?

relax gents im only teasing
even with the screen sticker it was not possible to resist giving it some stick from time to time
but not many people will want to cane their c63 mercilessly straight out of the box, you tend to run out of road

Thanks for the advice it's hard work i 10 minutes away I'll be going to Somerset so will try all the rev ranges Recon it's best to stick in. C mode upto to 70

Wanted to play around with the sport and manual modes but ill wait till after 1000 miles

+1, I'm with Mika on this, go with what AMG say... after all they are the ones who built the beast!

Ooooh you lot are all like a bunch of old women! :D

When I picked my C63 up from the factory I had it at the indicated 160mph limiter within the first 1/2 hour! And it didn't get a much easier life after that. My theory is that a nice hard run-in seals the engine better...makes it more powerful you see! And actually, I have something to back this up - firstly, you'll remember that my C63 did dyno VERY strongly (c.507bhp in standard tune) and secondly, when I had my e92 M3 a couple of years ago, I knew a guy who owned the one of the early M3 press cars (the grey one that was on Top Gear no less), and his M3 made a good 5% more power than mine on the same dyno. These press cars might well have had a different tune but my reckon it was more likely the hard life the press car would have had early on!

I bet my old C63 is still going strong in years to come but, to be honest, it aint my problem if, in 8 years time something breaks on it as a result of my initial driving style. And unless you intend to keep the car for hundreds of thousands of miles and many many years, why worry?? :dk: JUST ENJOY THE CAR!

Now, I await the replies of disgust from the rather more careful members.....

As above, modern engines do not need running in

stop faffing about, man up, grow some baws and just drive it normally

It's not going to go thermonuclear on you !!!

:D

I'm with Mika on this one, I followed the manufacturer's advice, drove it gently (revs low) but did a range of speeds. Revs did go above 4000 rpm about half a dozen times though, hard to resist!
