Cannot play MP3's in E-class W211 and AUX input

Hi All,

New to this and first post. I've just recently purchased a 2003 E-class 220 CDi (W211) and noted in the manual that the fitted Audio20 can play MP3's. My car has the single CD player in the head unit as well as the 6 CD changer below it. I have tried burning several CD's (TDK brand) and am unable to play any of them in either units. Can anyone help please with my questions below:

1. Does the car need any software upgrade to play MP3's and how do I find out if mine has this?

2. Has anyone created their own CD's and got them to play them? If so what CD burner software did you use and what settings did you have?

3. I've read in other posts that the W211 has an AUX socket in the glove compartment. Is this standard and where is it? Mine just seems to have a black plastic cap in the area where others have said they have a jack.

Many thanks.

Early CD changer did not play MP3 - I suspect yours may fall into that category
AUX socket only on W211 with COMAND. Dunno if this applies to the Audio-20-CD.
There are solutions to get an AUX / USB etc input into W211 Audio-20/Audio-50-APS but expensive
Somewhere I have read a FAQ on how to layout the MP3 on the CD for it to work in CDC that support MP3.

For completeness, early W211 COMAND didnt support MP3 playback, but there was a software update to enable it (some cars needed Star coding also to turn it on)

Did you close the CD during burning?

Re No MPS Player ability W211

Hi,
Old post new reply I know, but I couldn't play MP3's either, Mercedes recommended I either burn (convert) mp3s to CD format on RW disk's, or get a new head unit fitted (which would have set me back about 900 quid), so I took the cheapo option of buying a plug in £19.99 halfords radio transmitter with a good supression system to eliminate inteference, which the Audio20 has anyway, and the results are very pleasing.
This gadget also plays 4gb USB sticks directly, and so is ideal for music on the move - very happy with the results (2X4gb Corsair mem. sticks from Novatech in Pompey = £20.00), so all in all, as cheap as Mercedes chips (if they did them).
Must say, Mercedes facelift E320CDI is deffo the best car I ever owned bar none, 3litres of hill climbing torque (540NM), and still 45MPG if driven sensibly, OK everyones "out to get you" in a Merc, but I can live with that rep.

What gadget did you get from Halfords and how does it plug in? A pic would be great along with the URL for the gadget if that is convenient?

Many thanks - I love W211 too!

Hi Gollom Heres a link for the thing/Gadget I bought (mp3 player)

Hi,

Heres the link, its availiable from Halfords at 19.99.

Works brilliant for me (I had to hold the big silver play button for 5+ seconds to boost the power output to eliminate distortion though - its in the instructions how to do this).

Halfords | Sendai XM800 FM Transmitter

Sorry Iv'e been so long in replying! Happy 2011 btw.

I currently play mp3s through a headphone jack to cassette tape adaptor, which works very well. However, if I update to a newer car with no tape, I am lost! I do own an FM transmitter but I find interference is just too much in London
