cat5 to tv problem

yes and no,it will not work either connected to the router or just 1 cable connected directly to the modem

So, no matter what, using a 12m cable to the TV results is no connectivity? But using a shorter one is okay?

The 1m cable you've been using....is it a cross-over cable by any chance?

no
straight cable, made from the same roll of cable, same ends, tested using the same proving unit.my bald patch is growing by the hour

stp or utp

not sure a box of cat5 i use to wire offices

issue resolved
the colour sequence for rj45 plugs is white/orange.orange.white/green.blue.white/blue.green.white/brown.brown.
ive been making these ends off for years must have done 500 at least.for some reason i had altered the sequence of colours getting blue and green the wrong way around.but since i did this at both ends the proving unit says all is ok.
i only found out when as a last resort i cut the ends off the cable thinking i might have a bad batch of rj45 plugs and fitted another batch.hey presto all ok.
then i inspected the old crimped plugs and realised my error.

now why should this have caused my problem since pin 1 at both ends matched, pin 2 matched etc etc.

thanks for all who gave advise appreciated

But I thought you'd tried another known working 12m cable?

yes i made up another 12m cable but i used the wrong sequence.all 3 cables that would not work with the tv worked fine with a laptop or the playstation 3.

Must be slightly different spec NIC in the TV which is more fussy than the PS3/Laptop.

Glad you got it sorted and stopped the balding process! ;)

all up and running i run ps3 media server on the pc,this then allows all 3 tv's, ps3, hdd recorder and security camera's to access the hdd's on the pc,video and audio on all items with stutter free video fast forward and rewind.well worth the effort just a school boy error with my connections, sometimes the obvious dont click.
love it

As a quick FYI. Getting the colour sequence right is essential for staying in spec, some devices are very fussy and some boxes of cable have interesting lay lengths in the twist. Important also to wire parallel runs of cable from the same brand to avoid crosstalk. Very rare (and in this case I'm surprised) to get problems as if pairs 1 and 3 (blue and orange) are reversed most modern switches and all gigabit devices will automatically compensate. Wiring it wrong is a recipe for disaster in mixed ethernet / voice networks too...
