Caught speeding in a customers car

Yup it's a worry.

Given the choice I would always collect a new vehicle too, rather than have it delivered (unless it comes on a low loader). The thought of someone thrashing the nuts off a brand new engine doesn't particularly appeal. Particularly if you've ordered something a bit unusual or sporty where I'm sure the temptation to 'see what it will do' is higher.

I collected my first MB from the dealer , the second from Stuttgart and the 3rd was delivered on a low loader.....I wouldn't let a delivery driver deliver a car by driver...I've seen new cars on the motorway on trade plates going past me....

Yup the only new car I've had delivered (Honda) came on a low loader.

What car survey.

As a follow up here's an excerpt from What Cars recent survey on car servicing.

The in-depth report reveals 79.7% of motorists think that garages rip them off, and 85.3% say they've got more expensive over the past 12 months. Just 9.5% of respondents say they completely trust the advice they get from mechanics, and 78.5% think that it's time for the Government to step in and introduce proper regulation of the £10 billion a year industry. What Car? group editor Steve Fowler said: 'What Car? knows from its own mystery shops that the service being offered by workshops is substandard, sometimes even dangerous, but this survey reveals new depths of despair among the beleaguered motorist. 'Drivers don't trust garages, think they're being overcharged for poor work and, like What Car?, think the Government needs to step in and introduce a proper licensing scheme to drive up standards.'In 2002 the Department for Trade and Industry threatened to introduce regulation of the industry if it didn't get its house in order.
Since then a good conduct code was piloted and then scrapped by the Retail Motor Industry Federation. The British Standards Institute launched a Kitemark for workshops, but applications to join the scheme have been low. So far just 59 of the 25,000 workshops in the UK have joined up.

Most new deliveries I see now seem to be driven quite carefully - though one of our Zafiras came with free stonechips. Mate just had a Jeep Commander delivered, showing 25mpg on the trip computer, that seems like it was driven quite sedately to me.

When Accident Exchange dropped off an E280CDi for me it was showing 38mpg - again I would say quite gentle treatment.

Let me tell you a little story about someone I used to work with.

I used to work at a MB main dealer as a technician. One sunny day the service manager recieved a letter from a customer fuming. While we had this customers car in for service it had been caught by a speed camera speeding excessivly.

Enclosed was a picture taken by the camera of the offending driver. The person driving it was one of the collection and delivery drivers. He had the convertible roof down and the customers sun glasses on clear as day in the picture.

The c&d driver got 3 points a slap on the wrist by the manager and the picture blown up and displayed in the valet bay.

We laughed at his miss-fortune. I chatted to him later in the week and he confessed to driving an SL55 at 145mph racing another driver in an E55 to a customers address. This was a regular occurance and was cosidered a treat to drive at silly speed in an AMG variant.

It goes on in every dealer in every city.

Classic ...................:D

When my car was delivered back to me from a dealer at Boston it was absolutely covered in flies.

I couldn't give a damn.

My cousin is a Porsche Technician. He has to do pre-delivery checks sometimes which means rinsing them on the A10. He rang his boss at the side of the road, asking if the customer had arrived to collect his new 911. My cousin had buried it in a ditch, needing two trucks to pull it out. He still works there! In fact, he wants to open his own garage..any takers?

Errr...No!

Maybe Nickmercedes has an opening for him. He could break the cars without the need for any equipment or labour time.

Yeah, Its not only dealers... I took my car to Chips away (2006 Lexus GS450h) to get the wheels repaired... The lady said she'll give me a buzz when its ready.

A few hours later, she rang and told me to collect it. She also told me to be "Quick before the lads get hold of the key" :|

I do feel sorry for some poor ******* who bought a CLK320 a few years back. It was on the brand new reg, with someone in a Merc fleece behind the wheel, one presumes being delivered to its new owner.

The driver tried very hard indeed to stay with my old Civic down the Brackley bypass...probably too hard on a brand new car. I really wouldn't have wanted that one!

She was paying you a compliment. It's called humour, you should try it sometimes ;) :D

I had a bit more respect for customers cars.
I'm sure you - as an individual - did (and still do, I hope!), but how is a customer to know that you - as an unknown and unseen representative of "The Dealer" - are not one of the careless, boy racer bad guys?

I once watched a car transporter ship unloading Protons at Portbury Dock, Bristol. The whole operation resembled a demolition derby. Bus load of drivers enters ship, 20 or so cars come screaming out at maximum revs, some with body damage sustained whilst racing to be first off, repeat until ship empty
