Changing Disks and Pads on a CLK55 W208

Trouble is, after all this talk of "do my discs need changing/don't they?" I'm paranoid about driving the brakes hard in case they fail!!! Drama Queen I know, but I like the current shape of my motor :D

People have mentioned chaning the oil (fluid??) on the g/box, but Stealer didn't mention it when I explained the prob to them. I didn't want to tell them to do something that I don't know enough about.

Do you reckon I should ask my indy for an oil/fluid (are they the same thing??) change?

It's the other way round, brakes that are only ever lightly used can glaze the discs and have less braking power.Remember these cars are designed to cruise at 200 KPH on the autobahn, they don't like sitting idle never getting a good workout.
Why don't you change the gear oil as a first step...6 years is a good time to do the first change regardless.

I must admit, I was very surprised that the stealer said I needed so much doing to it at my service. I thought only using the car for motorway driving was better for the car!! (I suppose it is if the car is used daily on the motorway and not once every three weeks.)

Will mention gbox oil tonight to the indy. Will let you know how it goes.

OK been to see my indy.
He says back discs defo need doing and hence rear pads as well.
Front discs look ok so no need to do those but he can't tell if the front pads need doing until he takes the wheels off (sounds reasonable).

About the gear box, he said the only way to fix it for sure would be to remove the whole box, and replace some rings but that would cost about 2.5k. He said it really isn't worth doing. He also suggested changing the oil but said that probably wont cure it, it'll just stop it getting worse. (About 150 quid to change gbox oil)

I think, all in all, it's gonna cost me around 600 quid (including all the bits that MB said I needed doing like steering damper, exhaust bracket, door strap and other small jobs like that.) Plus I need a couple of new rear tyres soon so that'll be another 200 notes.

But I might just have it all done to give me peace of mind. (And stop having to ask you guys loads of questions all the time!!) Thanks for all the help/advice so far to everyone.
I'm booked for next Wednesday 22/02/06. Will let you know how I get on.

Cheers.

rebuilt box??

Sounds about right on the brakes. Although the front brakes do the bulk of the braking renewing the rear discs/pads will " firm up " the brake pedal feel a lot. Cant comment on the gearbox except you could start looking for a good second hand or rebuilt box (with warranty) from a specialist gearbox rebuilder.

What sort of price would a secondhand/rebuilt box cost to buy and fit? It sounds like it would cost a lot?
Indy said that he doesn't think it's worth worrying about. He says he's never known a gearbox to die because of this issue. But I wouldn't mind getting a second opinion from a gbox specialist. Will see if I can find one in my area.

The instructions are great however for some reason I cannot see the pictures and a dummy like me needs pictures.
Can somebody direct me to the pictures

thanks
Ian

The pics seem to have disappeared!

Hi,
I'm about to do a disk change on my W208 CLK55, found this and was delighted, but no matter what browser I use I don't see the pictures, red x in IE, a little square in Chroma and nothing at all in Firefox. :(
Is there any way to get some pics of the procedure, I think it's easy enough (done it before on a Subaru), but every little helps as Tesco have trademarked.
