Give the man and his team a chance I say, might just get two decent shows out of one that was frankly in need of a bit of an upgrade in any case....

Why are people getting hung up on the Co hosts being car people?

Top gear is not a car show, James may and Richard hammond aren't car gurus. It's just they are known because of the light entertainment show based around cars. The show made them into car people not the other way around.

Vicki butler Henderson is so annoying, she just squeals and gets excited because a car has power! If a man did that everyone would hate him.
Jason plato loves himself
rowan Atkinson would be a bore as would Chris Harris.

It's entertainers, like Chris Evans, that the entertainment show needs.

Indeed. He's been a motoring journalist for decades and was also a presenter on top gear in the 90's.

I'll throw my oar in for what it's worth.
I like Chris evans, personally. I was a fan of Toothbrush, TFI, and now his breakfast show.
I don't think he is necessarily right for top gear though. Crucially he is not a motoring journalist... The old 3 were, at least Clarkson and May were, Hammond more of a braodcaster at the start, but by the end 12 years a motoring journo...
Evans has been brought in as a headline name.
Looking back to 2002 who had heard of May or Hammond? Very very few. We all knew Clarkson. I expect unknowns (or relative unknowns) to be co-hosts.

My fear with Evans is that the BBC will try to replicate the antics and silly stunts with him... I really don't think that will work. However, Evans knows what he is doing and if he doesn't think it's right he won't do it. He'll have a big say in the content. That's why he is so successful to date.

So while i'm apprehensive about the new format, I'm wiating with an open mind.

I have to smile at the whole Top Gear debarcle:

"TG had got boring, sort it out"
"Clarkson sacked, it's an outrage. He only slapped some minion"
"Looks like the end of TG, oh no it was my favourite programme"
"TG is finished without Clarkson"
"Chris Evans for TG, nightmare, he's not qualified to host an entertainment programme on TV"

So what we have is a TV show over it's peak and roundly criticised by those who watch it. If, just say, I owned this franchise would I consider staging a dramatic end to this ailing format and introduce a 'saviour' to rescue the show leaving me to exit and pursue other goals?

Too right I would, new presenter(s) in place, I (and my pals) depart in a fog of warm sentiment - Tidy.

Chris Evans to lead.

Lewis Hamilton to be the equivalent of "The Stig" - I.e. the bloke who can REALLY drive.

Rob Bryon, Lee Mack and a few others rotating to do the "funnies" and then have a load of guest presenters to keep it fresh.

i had the same thoughts after watching TFI... Plato was pretty awful on screen I think. But he can drive, so would be good for fast laps and all the powersliding cr4p.

He's a knob. Can't stand the bloke.
He won't be on it at all. Too many commitments else where, lives in a different country, and Mercedes probably won't risk him injurying himself..

3 Car guys or 3 Entertainers will never work, a combination could though.

Apart from Chris Harris, the other Brit that stands out as watchable is Mat Watson. His delivery for even boring stuff is pretty good.

I wonder what he would be like on a bigger stage and thrown in with some contrasting presenters.
