thinking about getting something with 2 seats and very low mpg before kids come along and its all estates cars and child saftey locks!

had started looking for a 986 boxster 3 years old, but the crossfire has came into the picture bacuase of 1) the merc slk underpinings and 2) the massive spec/list of toys you get as standard and 3) really good second hand prices

does anyone have an experience of the crossfire, good or bad?

Given the choice what would you go for?

If my lovely Edna has to go - which she might - then I'd go for the xfire almost without any hesitation. When it was released it got rave reviews but there was always concern about the residuals which have proved to be pretty correct, making them excellent vaue for money. Especially considering what you are actually getting for your money!!

I've test driven both the base and SRT-6 (ie SLK32) versions, and if you've ever driven the R170 SLK, then the driving experience is basically the same. Looks are a subjective thing of course, but I kinda like 'em. Except for the silly wing they stuck on the SRT model. These cars didn't sell particularly well, so as you've noted, second hand prices are pretty reasonable. Go for the SRT model if you can find one, the extra power transforms the car.

I think Scotth_uk had one for a while - he might be the best person to comment ?

I have no experience of them personally but i do remember watching a reveiw on top gear about one, and they slated it.

Wonder if there'll be any longer term issues with these given the R170 underpinnings and the fact that M-B and Chrysler have now split?

Pammy sorry to hear you might have to get rid of Edna :(

Nice car - but not nice enough for me to buy.
Dont like the shape much.
I would rather have a slightly older Porsche or Alfa.

Hello.

I like them and although others have said get the porsche or it got slated when released.....thats great but....

we are now looking at secondhand deals and its a cracking buy.

You can get a MUCH newer Lower millage model than the equivalent Porsche.

When new, and the new price was probably compared to Porsche Boxster, Z4 etc, but now they are 12k Its an awful lot of car for the money.

ooh and much rarer...

so yes I like them

Really ugly in comparison to the Z4 and Boxster and perhaps a less desirable? More difficult to resale? quite old technology for a newish car also...

Jeremy Clarkson likened the back end of the coupe to the way a dog bends its back when it's having a cr*p.

I now cannot see one without making the mental comparison.

he also said the zonda looks like an F15 and that the cayman looks likes a kangaroo

That's an absolute steal at that price

Car Giant are fantastic. No frills, but good experiences and prices there. I bought 2x Mercs with no probs and heard others too. Good pics to..look out for the enlarged image option (no I don't work for them!)

Buy a brand new one at list price, and there are many better ways to spend your hard-earned.

Buy one nice and cheap and I reckon it's a car that can punch above it's weight - by that I mean it will perform and look like a more expensive machine. As you're looking second-hand, it's worthy of consideration.

FWIW I like the look of them and got quite tempted not long after they were released, as a local car supermarket had several - just a few months old and with between three and four thousand miles on the clock. Just over £15k for coupes at the time.

If a deal could be done on an SRT-6 it would be great fun, as well as a great bargain!!
