I have a problem (master of the understatement!)

A couple of months ago I did some retrofits to my new 2008 E280CDI.

I swapped an Audio 20 for a Comand APS head unit and added CDC, AGW and Sat Nav DVD drive. The Comand and Sat Nav were s/h, both manufactured second half 2007, the CDC and AGW are new. The cabling looms were bought on ebay and seem to be of a professional manufacture.

At the same time I also added a Dension Gateway 500 ipod interface.

Everything works perfectly and I haven't had a single problem with any of the equipment. Next step was to get the car coded and that is where I seem to have run into a brick wall (second time in 3 months but the other time it was a real brick wall hence the new car!)

It has been looked at by two garages both with Star diags and they have been unable to code the car. The first garage doesn't have a lot of experience with this but the second has done a few. The gist of what was said (if I remember it correctly) is that a short scan throws up a number of unknown devices but if he goes directly into the cluster section there is no option to add the Comand head unit.

I can live without the Sat Nav directions in the cluster (although being a bit of a perfectionist I would like to have the job completed) but I can't afford to need a warranty repair and the MB garage wondering WTF I've done to the car that throws up all these unknown devices!!

If I'd known in advance I was going to have these issues I would have physically disconnected the Gateway 500 first. That said it is fitted with a two way switch, one position being the "service" mode that is supposed to make the Gateway 500 "invisible" and the CDC "visible" to the diagnostics. I did make sure the switch was in the correct position.

Unfortunately the guy who has done this before doesn't have easy access to the Star diag so I can't just keep going back every five minutes. I'm happy to pay to get this sorted out but living in the north east of England I don't seem to be able to find anybody with a lot of experience in this area.

Does anybody have any suggestions please?

Try Alfie - or Command.co.uk. he is the xpert in that department

Thanks for the suggestion.

I'm hoping he will comment on this post but I'm always reluctant to ask people directly for help when they are giving their valuable time and expertise for nothing.

I second that. www.comand.co.uk, they can help you

If they can't I doubt anyone can.

They just helped me to install the IPOD kit yesterday

Ring Staithes Garage in Dunston- explain all - hes an enthusiast, ex head mech from consett main dealer. He will try as much as he can - although is very busy. But hes a good guy! Not wonderful with star but will give it a go.

He's a really nice guy......he was the first place I tried though :(

As an IT guy I was half tempted to ask if I could have a go myself but as an experienced IT guy I know that it is dangerous to play with this sort of thing if you aren't sure what you are doing. Wouldn't want to completely screw my car

Either Alfie or Richard will point you in the right direction...PM them for help..

SCN coding, on a lot of these newbies you will struggle to find a present / not present option like the older models.

Its not the only way and the pro's like Alfie and Richard will know the in's and out's but if the guy's you know have obtained the SDS machines via MB then they will be able to use SCN coding to update the cluster and its a well documented, relatively simple procedure so they will struggle to mess it up.

If you have installed the CDC, AGW, NAVI drive and comand correctly, then we should be able to get the car coded properly for you. If you did do all this yourself, then well done its not a trivial task.

The Dension gateway should be disconnected for now until we get it all coded properly. I know you are a long way away but if you come down to Surrey we can probably sort it out for you in an hour. Alternatively come along to the Nuneaton GTG on 22nd June and we will take a look at it there for you.

Just out of interest, what does STAR say is on the MOST bus?

I believe it is all installed correctly - it certainly all works perfectly and I've never had a problem with any of it. I actually rather enjoyed doing it (apart from the sore knuckles!). My work involves quite a bit of IT networking so the theory and practical aspects are not that dissimilar as long as you can find the technical info in forums etc.

Disconnecting the Dension is pretty easy as it is mounted behind the glove compartment. It is a (very) long way but I'm down in London for a Christening at the end of May and could arrange something for then - I'll get in touch directly.

Sorry, I didn't get that info.
