Thanks jumperjohn, much appreciated. You learn something new everyday. Using an iPhone so I'll clear them as no appropriate apps for this yet I think

Well I've cleared the cookies and history but I still get ad boxes on every page, any ideas anyone

I've got a disc from satnavi and it works a treat!

The dvd unit only reads the disc, it can't damage the dvd unit

But Mercedes will get you believing anything to get you to pay their prices!

Hi, Is your disc from sat navi still working ok, a year down the line, with no overheating on your system?

Not "quite" totally true. A DVD+/-R reflects less light than a commercially pressed CV/DVD owing to the different surface, light absorption, and also the non-uniformity of the pits/lands on the recorded surface. That probably means that the laser has to operate at "higher" power to achieve the same reflected level of light and be able to separate out the noise and track the surface of the disc effectively across it's surface and cope with surface imperfections (the pits/lands things can be reduced by reducing the writing speed - 1x is ideal, but "no drive" will let you go that low these days and always tries to optimise the disc calibration readings from the centre hub against the laser settings etc. I also say "no drive" but some will do, you just have to buy the right unit and be prepared for the cost!!)

In a purely scientific mode, that means that the unit will be working harder on some level therefore will be potentially more likely to fail sooner.

This was often the case with early DVD writer drives (and CD writer drives) that they would fail early due to the higher power output to write and read back the discs.

Of course, things have moved on a lot since those days, so all of the above may be complete cobblers on modern kit.

:p

Oh yes it can and will. Ive seen lots of them failing with copied disks.

Its an illegal copy plus it will shorten the life of your laser. Have a look here;

Fake & copied disks - Why you shouldnt use them

Actually the discs contain firmware or software updates which if fail part way through due to a bad copy it will render your unit useless.

This thread is about sat nav discs. Are you talking about Star laptops or SW DVDs? Perhaps a new (or different thread would be better for this question).

A star laptop cannot be genuine anyway, the genuine ones are tablets and are leased.

Hi,
I am talking about a seller called star-laptops on ebay, trading as paramount bargains advsertising the following.
★Mercedes Comand APS Sat Nav DVD v11 Upgrade 2009/2010★
He also trades on ebay europe site under the name of maximum blue with different email address and phone number.

star-laptops sell genuine discs, not bought myself but have seen posts from others who have.

Thanks for reply. What makes you think they are genuine? They sell them beteween £50-£100 where on earth would they get them from at that price?

They will be second hand and not the current version.

The 'current' version 12 for the A/B/C/CLK/ML/GL/R is about to be replaced;)

Hi Diesel Benz,
I am assuming that you understood the question wrong and hence your reply is not significant to this question?
The Person with the user name "Cassie43" was asking if I was selling Genuine DVDs or not?
To be honest, I am not being big headed or not to be rude but, the best answer to this question; can be seen or read by checking my ebay feedback.
Cheers

It absolutely can damage the DVD unit. Some of the reasons are
a) RW disks are reflect light less well than original disks, it means the unit has to retry reading, and gets hotter
b) Its not just a DVD unit, its a navigation processor. When you first put the disk in it does a firmware update - firmware load goes wrong, unit dies. New navigation processor for MB UK is about £3k.

2 weeks ago we saw two cases of this, a dead W211 navi drive, and more sadly a whole dead COMAND NTG4 which kept rebooting so we couldn't even get a diagnostic session to it. In the case of the latter, the website claims no one has ever had a problem ...

Needless to say the use of illegal copies possibly making it more expensive for those who won't and thus buy licenced versions of the disk as the map companies do have to make a profit somewhere !!

Hi Cassie43,
Yes, I have sold one Merc DVD Map disc (V11) for £50 (that was brand new and it was on ebay as a 3-day Auction. Unfortunately the auction did not attract enough buyers or watchers as the duration of the Auction was so short or it was my bad luck, don't know, but I lost considerable amount of money for that specific Brand new Merc DVD Map Disc. That is Auction you can lose money sometimes, as well as you can make profit on various items. This was no exception.
As for the others (in the range of £60-£85) which can be seen in my feed; they are all second hand ones; they all have got a few scratches on them hence they are used previously or returned items (for various reasons) to the main dealers.
Also as "Alfie" made it clear, The DVD Map discs that I am selling are not the Current version. i.e. it is version 11 not the last one on the market. The new one is Version 12.
In the mean time I would like to thank "Alfie" as he bothered to read my feedbacks on ebay and mentioned that I am selling Genuine items.
I would also kindly suggest you to check my ebay feedback about the Authenticity of the DVD map Discs that I am selling. It has been made clear and mentioned in the Feedback by so many buyers that they are Authentic/genuine items.
If you want to see one of the discs or proof of this Please kindly get in touch with me, I shall be more than happy to provide you with the proof that they are Genuine articles/items.
Cheers
