I have a 2014 c220 coupe 2014 and i noticed that the coolant liquid needs to be refilled. Strangely the engine oil level is rising and its colour is changing. What could be the problem. Im taking the car to an authorised service station next week. Car is still under UK warranty but at the moment i live abroad and warranty covers only 2 years here in Malta. Any help?

Looks like a head gasket has gone, try not to drive it too far,in this country you would I think have no trouble getting this repaired under warranty, haven no idea about Malta, but Mercedes dealerships should get the warranty work okayed by MB no matter where you are,let us know how you get on.

Is it something serious? Its 2014 with only 35k miles. Strange for a mercedes to happen in my opinion.

Well it is serious the head gasket between a water way and a oil way has failed and so the mixing of oil and water, you need to get this sorted as quickly as you can,I would thought you would get it under the warranty,if this was my motor I would contact the mercedes dealership, and either get them to recover it or drive it to them, the less you drive it the better.the cost if not under warranty will be expensive.

Classic symptoms of head gasket failure be care how far you drive keep it very minimal

I'm not sure I would drive it at all...water isn't a great lubricant.

What will the cost of replacing a head gasket be around?

What do you think of the oil colour? Can i drive it for 15miles to the service station?

If you arrive you will know the answer. But you are damaging the engine the whole time.

It's a Diesel engine, so rising oil level could cause serious permanent damage. I wouldn't drive the car.

If the oil level (when hot) is still well below the max mark, you could take a chance and drive it a short distance, but carry spare coolant and water because with further coolant loss the engine can also overheat.

On balance it would be best to have the car recovered to the nearest dealer. But it's your decision.

I drove one back from hockenheim with a blown head gasket just keep speeds low and regular check on the fluids. Got it back skimmed the heads new updated gasket my BIL sold the car a couple of months ago done 35k since the new head gasket and still going strong

Is it a problem that will happen again once i replace the head gasket?

The Mercedes Warranty is 2 years is world wide. I believe the UK warranty is two years plus a UK extension of 1 year- meaning presumably a car out of the UK after a certain period [ 60 days comes to mind] is not covered?? Time to examine the small print in the vehicle documents I think. In terms of recovery Malta is in the EU but again the time elapsed may disqualify the car. This may be one where you have to shoulder the immediate cost yourself and claim back subsequently from MB if you don't want to wait a long time to get the car back. Hopefully not if the car has an immaculate service record MB will deal expeditiously+sympathetically with your case with such a new car. If its the CHG then its going to be expensive so document /record all correspondence/communication with MB faithfully on this one. Be prepared to escalate your case to higher levels of management with greater powers of discretion than front line contacts who may simply be restricted to working from tick box action plans. Be doggedly persistent not angry would my negotiating tip.

In terms of cost, the parts aren't too bad (head gasket seal kit, fresh oil and coolant, etc) - probably £150-300 depending on where you buy it. I don't think the head bolts are of the stretch type so probably can be reused. The bulk of the cost will be labour, including skimming of the head. I estimate an overhaul cost of £1,500 from an indie to £3,000 from an MB Dealer - but this is our a rough estimate.

Regarding why it happened.... this can happen if the engine overheated, which would typically occur as result of an issue with the coolant system.

E.g. coolant loss due to a leak, faulty thermostat, faulty rad fan or switch, blocked rad, etc etc. In this case the garage will also need to find the cause and rectify it.

Also, has the original MB coolant been replaced at some point? The original MB coolant will have corrosion inhibitors, a low-quality coolant could allow corrosion to take place around the coolant passages near the head gasket.

Cylinder head gasket failure

The gasket itself is not hugely expensive , but there is a lot of labour involved in the job . Moreover , if it has been going any time it can wear a groove into the head along the track where the water has been escaping under pressure ( or in other cases , where compressed gases from a cylinder escape to a water gallery ) .

The head may need to be skimmed , or in extreme cases if it has warped a new cylinder head might be needed . Hopefully yours won't have gone so far , but this is why you shouldn't be driving the car now - the longer you run it in this condition , the greater potential for further and more costly damage there is .

It really shouldn't mater that you are abroad , your UK warranty should cover you whilst driving abroad if the car was purchased in theUK and is still registered here .
