1/ Could anybody provide a ball park figure on what would be a fair charge to replace a water pump (Parts / Labour) on an e class s211 assuming no other issues at an independent garage?

2/ What pump brand do you recommend if taking this on oneself? There seems to be quite a variety

Thanks in advance.

hi i replaced mine myself on my clk200 very easy job waterpump cost me £21 from eurocar parts it was an airtex pump

Depending on engine, approx £250-300 inc OEM part, labour and a new V Belt.

Recommend changing V belt tensioner and idler whilst the belt is off.

Thanks for this.

I have the e280 v6 and I cannot seem to find online a diagram / drawing of the belt path naming the various pulleys that matches my car. Can anybody help with that?

Usually a diagram in the owner's handbook

The genuine pump I fitted to my 190 was made by SKF, very good quality.

I've had a nightmare with cheap water pumps in the past, not something to skimp on.

No diagram in my owners manual i am afraid.

Not going for a cheap pump - was surprised by the difference in costs between brands - that was why I wanted views on the quality - so thanks for the feedback.

Main dealer quoted me £192 for pump belt and coolant - if I gave them the old pump.

A local independent quoted a little over £400 to supply and fit genuine MB pump and belt.

Decisions.

That main dealer price of £192 for pump and belt sounds cheap.

An independent. I paid £270 at an independent near me for a belt and tensioner fitted on my cls. Seemed steep but needed doing same day.

The £192 was for the parts only. The pump is £107+Vat but they refund £27.80 if you return the old one. Belt is 29.60+Vat. Coolant 23.56+Vat.

Just out of interest, why does the main Dealer want the old pump? What do they do with it?

Get them reconditioned iirc.

I still don't see what they'd do with them.
Main dealers like you to change brake pads with 40% still left on them.

With the throw away/replace mentality of Stearerships I'm surprised they'd go to the hassle of getting a pump reconditioned. What do they do with them? I didn't think they sold used parts?

So I put the car into the independent in the end and it turns out the water pump was fine! They could not replicate the overheating problem at all.

After some discussion it was agreed to replace the thermostat in case it was sticking. I also had the poly belt replaced as it was badly worn.

I saved a bit of money but not hassle by having a Dayco (from ECP) belt fitted after approval from the garage.
I had done some research and Dayco seemed a good option.

Unfortunately 140 miles later the belt snapped clean in two causing some damage to the pulleys and tensioner and involving another tow to the garage.

The independent got ECP to cover the replacement parts (contitech) and they did the work FOC.

I got the car back today with a one year warranty from ECP.

Would have preferred MB parts but I am just relieved to get the car back without another bill - thought the garage were quite fair and helpful.

Fingers crossed I dont have another incident for a while.
