Dealer damaged my alloys. Your thoughts please.

Hang on, I just noticed you purchased from a MB dealer - I thought it was mandatory that the wheels were refurbed before the car was up for sale as 'Mercedes Approved', maybe I am wrong.

That looks pretty old damage to me I see these
Every day ,
Unless the wheels are re done on a machine
These will look repaid !!

Unreasonable to expect brand new wheels , and extremely unlikely to happen.

Reasonable to expect them repaired.

Agree with this.....you did well, they could have denied any knowledge.

I bought my car at 10 months old. Went with a mate to look at it, paid particular attention to the wheels as they're a sure sign of how careful a driver the prior owner was. Anyway, all wheels looked perfect to both of us.

Fast forward to me picking up the car...the AMG Mats had been pinched, though the salesman did get me some replacements...which did not fit as they were from a different model. The folding box had vanished from its tray, the salesman pinched one from another car - exactly what had happened to my car most likely. Finally, the wheels - they'd slapped tyre black on them, though most of it had gone on the wheels! Trying to cover something up maybe? Also, they tried to back out of the "2 Years Free Servicing" that was stamped all over the advert, when I asked about the paperwork for that. Turned into a total cowboy outfit once they had my money!

To cut a long story short, the pristine wheels I'd inspected the car with either degraded in the space of a few weeks, OR they were different wheels. My car had been booked in to be detailed and my detailer informed me that the wheels appeared to be much older than the rest of the car and had evidently been bodge repaired - so much so that when my servicing dealer (different garage) gave it a clean with a power washer, they managed to strip the lacquer off the diamond cut rim on every wheel.

In the end, I got £500 from the sourcing dealer to get my wheels professionally refurbished, which I did - but it took a LONG time to get sorted.

To the OP: I'd insist that the wheels were properly refurbished, NOT smart repaired. That's what the dealers £500 paid for in my case.

I'll add that I'm impressed your dealer admitted fault, that's so very rare! So, points to them for that.

Was that a MB dealer?

Op,

My thoughts:

The wheels have been damaged some time ago - in my view. There is dirt in the scratches and they look like they have been around for a while.

The tyres all seem new and unmarked. The scuff protection strips on the tyres also seem intact, so whether, they put new tyres on and swapped the rims I'm not sure. I would expect the tyres to be damaged so I am confused on this.

If the mileage has not changed since the vehicle was sold and it is now showing the same miles, something doesn't add up. If the mileage hasn't changed at all, then the wheels must have been taken off the car in the interim if you are certain they were totally unmarked when you inspected the car.

I would keep asking the questions until you are happy with the answers.

Cheers for your comments everyone. Going to speak to the dealer again tomorrow and try to get to the bottom of this.

This.

I'm more cynical.

They admitted it because they know they've been rumbled and are trying to achieve a cover-up (no pun intended!) by offering a cheap repair.

Tell them to either a) put the original unmarked wheels back on the car, or b) provide a full (i.e. not SMART repair) refurb of all wheels and throw in a free service (or two). If they baulk, suggest that you'll take the matter up with the Dealer Principal. Theft is a pretty serious matter ;)

Looking forward to hearing the outcome of this - but to me this is a pretty straightforward case of theft. You put your car in with one set of wheels and they return it with another - without your permission. What if it had been the whole car?

Good luck and I hope they do the right thing.

This is all rather odd. Just bought a C63. When i first looked at he car it had scuffed alloys, however on collection all 4 wheels where pristine...

The salesman and his boss not in today. The boss is in tomorrow so will keep you posted.

For those still interested I spoke with the Site Sales Director today.

He personally had conducted an appraisal on the vehicle before it went on sale and told me the wheels were fine at the time, which they were when I looked at them originally. He was also emphatic that the wheels haven't been swapped off another car. However he didn't know how the damage had occurred.

I told him I didn't want a smart repair and he told me all four wheels would be sent off for a proper repair.

Credit where it's due. I don't suppose I could ask for better than that. Still p*ssed off they were damaged in the first place though!

Many thanks to everyone who chipped in with their thoughts.

Cheers.

Will you get a courtesy car while your wheels are away?
Good to see the dealer taking responsibility and getting them repaired.

I still think he is covering for someone at the dealership though. How on earth can anyone damage 4 wheels like that. They musthave been swapped.

Yes I'll get a courtesy car.

He's not going to admit to me that they swapped the wheels if that's what they did. Like you suggest, to damage 4 wheels takes some doing though.

Out of interest does anyone know if there is a date of manufacture stamped anywhere on the wheels?

You would usually find the date of manufacture cast into a spoke on the rear face of the wheel. On my wheels, the date is in the form of segmented "wheels" with a dot indicating the month / year.

The date is printed on the inside of the rims on my AMG wheels, noticed today when I had the tyres removed pending a re-furb. Sorry to read your tale of woe, if it were me I would have insisted on new rims:)

Will take off the wheels and have a look tomorrow.

Just looking at the wheels again and I'm getting wound up! The tyres provide the wheels with a degree of protection by virtue of being proud of the rim. As others on here have pointed out the tyres are totally undamaged on my car indicating the wheels have been changed.

Can anyone suggest a way I can prove this has happened as the dealer point blank denies it?

I know what you mean, but just make sure when they get the wheels refurbed they are done with the tyres off. Not just touching up the rims.
