Diesel Economy Experiment

We'll agree to disagree then. I have test results to back up what I say

So do I and 30 years experience, but opinions vary and everyone is entitled to theirs. So I'm quite happy to agree to disagree. Would be a dull world if everyone were the same :)

Yep - we must have a proper talk about this over a beer or two sometime. I will always use supermarket fuels and do about 35K miles a year without any issues at all.

Looking forward to an amicable and challenging discussion in a convivial atmosphere... as you rightly say, it would be a very boring world if we all agreed, provided that we can be adult about the not agreeing bit!

PS running with Millers or V power/Bp Ultimate/Excellium etc, I would not expect a problem. I ran a costing some time ago and depending upon where you buy, if you can get the Millers cheaply that's a better bet as the cetane improvement is about the same. Seems to benefit remapped engines more. I ran for 3000 miles with BP ultimate on a standard diesel engine and it showed a 0.2 decrease in consumption with no discernable difference in "power". Others have demosntrated a benefit, albeit with remapped engines

Hope you don't run the CLK230 Kompressor on diesel though :D

Cheers!

Look forward to that beer, you dont say where you are, I'm in Yorkshire but travel the UK extensively so hope we can meet up I always like to get others views and opinions, maybe you can get to one of the GTG's too.

No CLK runs on V power although after lots of miles in the Volvo its a concious effort every time to get the right pump

Best regards
Ian

I'm in Suffolk but spend a lot of time hacking around in an aeroplane, mostly for work (manage contracts for an oil testing and inspection company). Do a lot of miles on continent and also to the Wirral. Couldn't resist the CLK dig!

It will take a lot of beer to convince me of the merits of branded fuel, but I'm sure that I could make that sacrifice

All the best
David

pop over to scoobynet and take a look at the impreza head that only covered 23000 miles on Morrisons best before failure. I have exactly the same rally car my engine is frequently stripped and is clean as a whistle at 69000.

I'd be very interested to know how many cars suffer problems that can be proven to be caused by inferior fuel. I don't think it can be a lot, because otherwise word would get around and the news would be full of it. I can just imagine the headlines "supermarket fuel kills engines".

What about those that failed while using so called 'premium brands'. No difference IMO.

Sorry yes I have loads of data to sort and then I'll post but, car has now returned to standard and going for its first service tomorrow then, Ill get *** to remap it and off we go again for 6000 miles of data.

Will post results for tests so far very shortly hopefully this week

regards
IAn

Just a gentle reminder that you posted this in June and said something pretty similar in April. I think it is now September 1st!:)

Loading my shopping into the car at the supermarket yesterday an old man came up and started talking about cars. When he found out that mine was a diesel he told me the secret of why diesel engines are cheaper to run than petrol.

Diesel cars have a return pipe back to the tank, while petrol cars don't, so diesel engines take what fuel they need but petrol engines use all the fuel sent to them. Now I bet none of you knew this amazing fact.

I was going to ask him why if that was the case they did not fit a return pipe in petrol driven cars, but when he said he has a petrol engined car and would never buy a diesel I gave up and drove home.

I trust this gem of wisdom has cleared up any misconceptions you might have had about the differing fuel consumptions.:D

Brilliant!:D By logical extention of this little gem we can understand many things....like why all pubs have toilets.....and why I have had so much trouble over the years returnig hot, pressurised, cavitated and obvoiusly unwilling fuel to race car fuel cells after a trip around the injection system.
It shouldn't be there!
You live and learn!

Never got around to posting them but can dig them out if you are all still interested

Yes please - would love to hear the results.

I've just done my first comparison of computer vs brim to brim sums on the CLK..

computer 46...tank plus calculator 41.5 - I expected a difference, but not that much!

My car now has 42k miles and the fuel computer is a constant 0.3 mpg out over that distance which I think is really good :)

Mine has worked out at 0.5 mpg difference :)

My computer seems to read 9% high, over 4k miles.
