Is it now more economical to run a petrol engined car, than a Diesel engined car, MPG etc. due to the more expensive price of Diesel at the pumps ?

No.
The price difference is about 9% and a diesel SHOULD get better than an additional 9% mpg so it's more economical to use diesel still.

I'm with Dieselman.

The increasing price differential does help to build a stronger case for buying second hand cars which traditionally depreciate more heavily in petrol rather than diesel derivatives.

For example petrol engined SUVs and large saloons/estates are often much cheaper than the equivalent diesel. If you can save enough on the purchase price, then it can make a petrol model an attractive proposition, and the increasing differential in pump prices will help make it look even better.

Low mileage in my ML350 (petrol) means it would take years for diesel premium to pay off....so no, diesel wasn't adding up for me (hooray, it sounds great too) :bannana:

If you do less than 12,000 miles a year the premium you pay for a diesel engined car doesn't seem worth it to me and I'm also coming to the opinion that modern diesel engined cars are actually costing more to run in terms of maintenance, ie replacement injectors, EGR Valves, glow plugs etc which all seem to suffer from the high pressure injection systems used nowadays......

diesel wasn't adding up for me

Until you come to sell it.

There is no need to recoup the additional price paid for a diesel as reduced depreciation will give you that figure back on sale time.

ML320Cdi

Figures are 3 years, 36,000 miles and show Maintenance, Depn, Total cost per mile and MPG.

MERCEDES-BENZ M CLASS DIESEL SW
ML320 CDI 5dr Tip Auto....6.42....65.51....90.27....28.8

MERCEDES-BENZ M CLASS STATION WAGON
ML350 5dr Tip Auto....5.53....75.01....100.79....24.1

So petrol is indeed slightly cheaper to maintain but overall costs 10p per mile more.

but the diesel costs more, and in many cars service intervals are shorter. 10k miles as opposed to 20k.
if you are buying anything less than 1.5, just buy a petrol

You're out of date on both counts.

Anyway cost per mile accounts for all that..;) Diesel wins by over 10p per mile.

the diesels cost about £1k more than the petrol equivalents in many models excepet KIA ceed that have on offer petrol same price as diesel till end of may., and if you are buying a 1.5, it is probably a shopping trolley not doing galactic miles.
Now if it is on finance, the £1K could easily become £2k

What date am i out on?

Take the ML 320 Cdi and ML350 they both have the same List price of £38,785.

I'm not sure how you see that as different.

The service intervals on diesels have been longer than 10k miles for years. VAG diesels can go to a maximum of 30k.

those are not the same engines. i bet if there was an ML 350 cdi it will be more expensive.
bmw 320i cheaper than 320d by about £2k.
530i cheaper than 530d by £500

scenic 2.0 dynamic < 2.0 dci dynamic £2k

407 2.0 < 2.0hdi £2.5k
e.t.c
they may have similar performance but factoring in selling time is a bit funny as there is no assurance, that you might sell it later or that it might not be written off in a crash.

The two MB products are matched to be the closest in terms of overal performance and build. They are both V6 engines with similar performance.

Strangely both the V8 engined vehicles are also the same price..

The other cars are cheaper as petrols to actualy move some petrol stock as they are not selling as petrols at all.

but look at the overall cpm even for those cars.

PEUGEOT 407 DIESEL SALOON
2.0 HDi 136 SE 4dr 56.64

PEUGEOT 407 SALOON
2.0 SE 143 4dr 59.13

And the diesel still offers better performance even though it costs less to do so..

Even if your car was written off it still has a market value.

Ahem, not on my Diesel they're not! <10K between service!!!:( :(

I think my dino-diesel is cheaper to service than a petrol model. At least I don't have to worry about spark plugs, HT leads and coil packs.

In a service all you need is spark plugs. cost £2.50 for a pack of four/
why do you need HT and coil packs

on a W211? Either (a) you drive everywhere in the lowest gear possible, (b) the service droids are resetting the service counter to a short interval or the wrong oil type or (c) you do about 4000 miles per annum...

What I meant was that there is less to go wrong. I must confess I didn't realise that spark plugs had become so cheap!

is there less,. no need for blocked turbos then and common rails e.t.c

That's why I said my dino-diesel, not one of the modern ones. I didn't know blocked turbos were a common problem.
