Diesel v Petrol

That's because you've got an old clunker type, not a new fangled wizzy CDi where everything goes wrong too often.

As they old saying goes, They don't build them like they used to.

Theres also the fact that the petrol is more enjoyable in terms of accelleration, smoothness and quieter ?

Only sort of correct.

Diesels have quicker accelleration due to the higher torque output and no petrol engine is as smooth as a n/a indirect engine, they have such a flat torque curve.

Under way many diesels are quieter than petrols, which is borne out by the drive by noise tests, although admittedly some petrol engines are very quiet, yours being one of them.
Try a four pot 2.0 litre Mercedes engine for a rude awakening.

Diesels are at their worst at idle following a cold start. After that it just gets better.

I found as a young person that petrol is far better for setting fire to grassy railway embankments.

Diesel just wouldn't catch..
:D

Yes I'm glad the sound made it to this discussion. I put my foot down in my ML (petrol) and one of my passengers interrupted the conversation..."woooaa..cooool, this car makes a gooooood sound". I think he'd put his window up in a diesel

I'll give you two of those points!

Mine sounds great actually, it almost sounds like a V8 when you boot it.

(But I do have a non standard exhaust)

on a W211? Either (a) you drive everywhere in the lowest gear possible, (b) the service droids are resetting the service counter to a short interval or the wrong oil type or (c) you do about 4000 miles per annum...

Oh, Oh, Can I pick (B) please, pretty please!!!!!! I'm assured that they are using the correct oil (Mobil one I think).

As for A) I love booting my car around, but even so I don't tend to end up using a kickdown that often. This is my first diesel and I still haven't gotten over how low they rev too, it always surprises me when I see the rev counter shoot across the dial so quickly :) (well, I would occasionally do it in my Civic, but you gotta love those VTEC engines:D )

and C) I did about 650miles in the last two weeks, I think I will probably end up close to 18K by the time I've had the car for a year.

Having just had mine serviced yesterday, I looked through the book and it averages out at 19k for the interval on mine (twice a year). They've put a sticker in the windscreen this time with the (Mobilo number) and "Next Service" info - 19K miles or 1 year from yesterday's date.

I've been very happy as I thought it was always around 10k for a Diesel...

Also it's only had one problem - failed turbo which was fixed by Mobilo / Warranty.

I've always rated reliability on whether I've missed any meeting / appointments due to a failure on the car's part - with this or the Omega i had before the answer is no. Can't be said for some of the others I've had...

those are not the same engines. i bet if there was an ML 350 cdi it will be more expensive.
bmw 320i cheaper than 320d by about £2k.
530i cheaper than 530d by £500

scenic 2.0 dynamic < 2.0 dci dynamic £2k

407 2.0 < 2.0hdi £2.5k
e.t.c
they may have similar performance but factoring in selling time is a bit funny as there is no assurance, that you might sell it later or that it might not be written off in a crash.
If you really want an exact comparison then the older E-class 211 320 is the answer. I know you will mention turbo's etc but that is a separate debate. The 3.2ltr petrol E-class was in excess of ONE THOUSAND pounds more expensive, far more thirsty regarding fuel, more regular servicing and steeper depreciation. I am NOT advocating either diesel, or petrol, we can all make our own decisions, all I am saying is the 3.2 petrol E-class was not a popular choice of car and it is irrelevant what ancillaries are fitted. You pays your money and buys the product.

John
