I have decided to chance a DIY on changing antifreeze in my 1999 c180 1.8 petrol w202. Could anybody tell me exactly where the cylinder head drain plug is located for the coolant release .( I presume there must be a plug?) how would I recognize it ? I think I will go with Mobil 1 antifreeze , is this a good choice?

sorry to couldn't help you more, but you should be able to see the plug in the cylinder head if you take away the lower plastic protection and you will lie down the car. It should be a 13 mm plug fully recessed in the engine block, may be it's difficoult to locate.

There is a picture in Haynes Manual but sorry, I'm not able to obtain it.

I know this because times ago I was wondering to drain the engine block and the radiator, but due to the difficoult location of the plug and some suggestion made by someone (possible leak of the plug) I preferred to proceed only with the radiator (probably also the dealer proceed in this way).

difficult access

The block drain plug is under the exhaust manifold on the offside (DRIVERS SIDE ) of the engine block. Its hollow so if you slacken it the water drains from the centre. VERY difficult to get at except from under the car. Use the proper MB antifreeze. part no A 000 989 082511 for 5 litres. Its not too expensive. Use 50/50 water/AF mix. COOLING CAPACITY is 8 litre without AC / 8.5litres with air con.

Thanks a lot Graeme and Marco , very useful information and very much appreciated

further, with the drain plugs open, turn the key (BUT NOT START THE ENGINE!!!) and than put the climate control to max heat, this will permit you to open and drain further antifreeze liquid.
