Drilled Disks

If you drill them yourself you will need either a jig or to have them very accurately measured out, also you will need to slightly countersink the holes.

Cast holes = Good.

Drilled holes = Cracks.

seems to be more negatives than positive views on DIY drilling. Not sure what to do now.

I will ponder on it for a few weeks. Thanks.
 
There is some information on the EBC site about drilling, or not, as the case may be. They don't drill theirs, they are countersunk only.

Thought about that, countersink rather than complete drill, but using a bench drill, maybe difficult to know when to stop the drill.

Suppose I could use the depth gauge?


Basically, the wheels do not look right with the old rusty rim discs showing, not keen on spending unavailable cash on pre drilled discs. May need to settle for Euro economy discs.

Most bench drills should have a stop fitted. Once set it should be easy. If there is no stop then fit one onto the drill bit at the appropriate depth.
 
I have the EBC discs on my 202.

Excellent braking, low dust (with the greenstuff pads) but much more noisey.
 
But I do not have enough money as you, to buy them. Looking for the cheaper option :confused:
 
Having seen your very nice wheels on the other thread, I think you need to invest in the larger diameter cross-drilled Sports Pack discs. Only £70 each from MB.

Only problem is you would need the larger calipers... £300

Big diameter alloys need big discs, otherwise they can look a little "Corsa" IMHO

Don't drill the disks yourself. R2D2 had his drilled by a specialist company (try searching the forum).

Alternatively you could do what I (& a few others on here have done) and upgrade to the full sport pack solution, bigger drilled disks and calipers with the Mercedes Benz lettering. :D

Thats right, and he can turn them from blanks as well. I can't remember the price but it's quite reasonable. I was going to get my rears done.

What's noisy, the pads or drilled disks.? I suspect the disks as I have EBC pads and no noise.
 
I have all original MB Sports Pack set-up. No noise under normal braking. Slight "growl" when braking very heavily.

But, boy, do they brake! Very impressive stopping power :)
 
Drilled disks don't help braking power, they reduce it due to less frictional contact area.
The point of drilling is to dissipate water, cool the disk and allow entrained gas to escape.
Only the water issue really applies to road use as the disks won't get hot enough for the other items to be an issue.
They also reduce pad life due to shaving the pads all the time.

Whatever, the stopping power is much greater than I have experienced before. The larger diameter must help? The heat dissipation must help reduce fade?

These are "Sport" brakes, implying suitability for a more "enthusiastic" driving style.

I managed 45k miles from a set of pads / discs which IMHO isn't bad.

Aren't the Sport calipers twin pot instead of single, that would help quite a bit along with the larger disk size.
 
Very true! :)

These brakes have really impressed !

Even after repeated heavy applications they are strong and predictable.

My only concern is with following cars, any "tailgaters" are in for a shock! A few times I've listened to screeching tires...

If drilling, how could the brakes brakes fail ?

Highly unlikely the the disc will break up.
