If drilling, how could the brakes brakes fail ?

Highly unlikely the the disc will break up.

Just a thought! It seems that DIY drilling could weaken the structure. Proper OEM discs/pads seem far better

Called my insurance co. Asked if was acceptable and what additional premium would be.

Answer: Altering brakes in any way from manufacturer original specification was a straight no can do or policy is void.

So that's that knocked in the head.

I'm not surprised - good that you asked. I bet there are a lot of people driving round with "upgraded" brakes that aren't declared.
