Drivers to be banned from picking up mobile phones

Technological advances to build in a 'disabler system' so that the phones don't work.

This already exists on iPhone. It’s a soft limitation, ie can be over-ridden, but it’s a useful feature for removing unnecessary distractions when driving.

Turning on the Driving Focus helps you stay focused on the road. When you turn it on, text messages and other notifications are silenced or limited. You can have Siri read replies to you, so you don’t have to look at your iPhone. Incoming calls are allowed only when iPhone is connected to CarPlay—a car Bluetooth system—or a hands-free accessory.

MrSpiky has a phone supplied by her employer for work use only. The company rule is that the phone must not be used in the car at all; the IT Dept has even disabled Bluetooth on it so you can't even pair it to the built in hands-free.

Yep that was the rule where I worked - it was a disciplinary matter if you were caught. This was a global policy which was more difficult to enforce in countries where mobile use was legal or considered normal/acceptable.

It’s relatively common to have strict policies regarding the use of mobile phones in safety-aware industries, and often prohibit use whilst driving, walking in car parks and on staircases, and in one even whilst walking in corridors or footpaths.

My wife and I where on the A1 where it joins M1 north bound yesterday lunch , There had been a accident van into rear of Bmw we was stationary while they dragged it off to side so traffic build up speed so braking a lot looked in rear view mirror A complete tool in 7.5 ton truck holding vape in one hand and phone in other reading meesages so when we had to brake expected him ploughing into us wish I had review camera ( contemplating getting one ) really make me nervous see it too much now really boils my blood

When I was on HS2 sites mobiles were banned.

Here in Egypt it appears to be illegal not to have a phone wedged between head and shoulder while driving, even if the vehicle is new enough to have Bluetooth.
Greece appears to be much the same - they keep the phone wedged to the ear with the shoulder so they have both hands free to gesticulate during animated calls or at tourists in hire cars.

When I was a holiday rep I used to do a welcome speach on the transfer coach for the new arrivals.
One of the first things I had to tell them was to please wear the seatbelts and the coach is non-smoking. At that exact point the driver would light up a fag, have a slurp of his frappe and have a chit chat on the phone!! He obviously wasn’t wearing his seatbelt! 🤣🤣

I'd forgotten about the omnipresent frappe in its plastic cup with straw (and the worry beads that needed constant fondling)
