Driving holiday to the west coast of France?

Do what I do. Leave a day before your missus and the kids, enjoy a nice solo drive through France without having to worry about the kids getting restless. Stay in a decent town that evening, enjoy a bottle of wine and nice meal in the town square watching the world go by then, well rested, drive to the airport the next morning to pick the brood up before a short hop to your destination.

All you need is to plan it right and have a compliant other half who doesn't see undertaking a couple of flights with young kids in tow as a problem. The advantages are you can get further south for the better weather and you get some valuable 'me' time :-)

Now there's a plan :-)

Fire up E500. Set the controls to the heart of the sun. Depress accelerator. I like it.

Don't miss San Sebastian over the border in Spain...

Pre-kids I did two 200SX blasts from the east to the west of the Pyrennees (talking in San Sebastian) and then back up the west of France. I had a very memorable 369 mile trip from the Spanish border to Le Mans.......

Bliss

May be a bit much for my two and a half year old though....

My preferred crossing would be overnight Portsmouth - St Malo. It's the furthest South West ferryport. Upgrade to Commodore class and get a good cabin (family size) right up behind the driver and priority for the resturant.
Drive from St Malo as far down as Lacanau or Hossegor easily done by tea time.
