Father wants to also by a W211. He used to drive my e270 CDi and was impressed.

He has around 14-16k to spend, and for that figure i am hoping he goes for a 320 CDi.

He is concerned with fuel consumption. Does the E320 CDi drink a lot more than the E270 CDi?

I went from an audi diesel to the E270 cdI and i was not impressed by the 32MPG i was seeing on a regualr basis..

The fuel consumption on the 320 CDI is quite good, this works on a power to weight ratio, and the heavier the car the more this comes into effect.

I do not think that I have seen a post on complaints about that engine

Ive had both, the e270 used to give me 43-44 on a run, the e320 gives me 37-39.
In town the 270 would be around 25, the 320 around 20.

20MPG from a E320CDI is pretty bad...Why not drive a petrol instead if the vehicle is for town use! I would have expected 30MPG range for town and 40+ for long distance.

That sounds pretty low for a 270 too, I get 50+ on a run & 35 for mostly traffic driving (averaging 20-25mph).

Our 320CDI is used mainly for town driving. We live in an extremely hilly area of the country but fuel consumption averages 29mpg which in my opinion is excellent.

If your father is concerned about fuel, then make sure he accepts these cars must be spoilt. Cheap servicing my work out to be an expensive option.

I live in london, my version of town driving, is more town crawling.
Motorway is mostly european driving at around 85-90 mph.

The E320cdi figures shown here are almost exactly my real world miles per gallon. Also mainly driven in London when around town, and on the European motorways when out of town.

I think our next car will be the 270 or even 220 - it's actually a significant difference when a lot of driving is around town.
