Hi folks,

New member here, picking up a 2018 E63s estate on Friday this week and bursting with anticipation!

As a family man this has been something of a dream car for as long as I can remember, and the stars have finally aligned to make a purchase possible.

I’m looking for any ownership tips as I’ll be a first time AMG owner - particular your thoughts on security and care of this car.

It’s fitted with a tracker and I’m considering getting a Ghost immobiliser fitted - does anyone have experience of these or could anyone suggest alternative security I should consider?

My car is in Selenite Magno matte grey which I love the look of but appreciate may prove trickier to care for. Again, any advice on protection or cleaning from experienced owners would be welcomed.

Thanks in advance for your ideas. Looking forward to being a member of this forum.

Securitywise Tracker is pretty good, just keep your keys safe at home. As for keeping the car looking good you have three choices. Lots of washing and waxing at home using decent shampoos, liquids, sprays, microfibres and hours of cleaning. Paying a detailer to come over and do this for you or having your car professionally coated with ceramic protection materials. Not cheap but well worth the investment.

The Ghost immobiliser is very highly regarded on here. I know a lot of AMG owners have had it fitted for peace of mind.

Hello and welcome fellow AMG'er. As mentioned in posts above, ghost is worth having, but I would also consider a visual deterrent like a disklok or crooklock, as that would put off most thieves even attempting having a go at stealing the car.

Also depending on whether your keyless button comes out or not, on my c class it does and I took it out ... i use the keys now.I also have a tracker and a ghost.
I was at mb world brooklands yesterday and had a total blast in a c63s and there was a e63s being driven around and the instructor told me that this car gets near zero wheel spin and puts pretty much all its power down, and is very rear wheel drive biased. I was impressed, and no doubt you will be too !!! Congrats

Welcome to the forum:thumb:
What a great introduction to the brand.
I recently had Ghost fitted to my E63 and its a worthwhile addition. Also, get one of those faraday signal blocking pouches from eBay to drop your keys into at home.
I'm not sure about the W213 E class with keyless go but on my W212 if you double click the lock button on the fob, the keyless system is disabled. The mirror indicator will flash 4 times to confirm its been deactivated. Obviously touching the door handle next time won't open the car and you need to click unlock on the fob.

You won't sleep much this week:banana:

Will the W213 not have the updated fobs that ‘go to sleep’ when not being moved around?

Not on the W213

Theoretically yes. However, would you trust them?

Double pressing of the lock button on the key in quick succession disables the keyless element of it and was a habit I got into when I had mine. The visible aspect, such as you get with a steering wheel locking device as mentioned above, is also something worth looking at.

Welcome Mr Burger, great choice of car. I have the same paint, I took PPF precautions not long after it rolled out of the Dealership. Hopefully yours doesn't already have any stone chips because last time I checked they can't be touched up. The saving grace is any small chips or blemishes can be covered and unnoticeable after installing PPF. I've now had this car for 23 months and it's evident that the PPF is doing it's job with a few surface dinks on the PPF that would certainly have been paint chips if unprotected.

I had Paint Protection Film installed on the front end (front bumper, bonnet and wings) and a ceramic coating all over the car including the PPF.
Below are a few of links to the threads I've posted in. Also search PPF in the forum search bar at he top right of all pages.

Matte paint - anyone have experience of it?

Due to the valuation of this car my insurance company required that a tracker was installed before they would cover me. As you can see from the few replies already Ghost immobiliser are rated well on this forum.

I also double click my fob when parking up to disable the keyless entry. I wont use a faraday signal blocking pouch when parking up overnight at home, my fob is left on a table at the front door. If someone comes to the farm and wants my car they can have it. I live out of the way and if they have traveled that far to take the car then I'm sure they would be willing to go the 'extra mile' and break into the house. Having the keys at the front door may prevent a home burglary and if it doesn't prevent them from breaking in, then hopefully it prevents them from going hunting for the fob/family.

I hope this helps and I wish you many enjoyable miles in your wonderful purchase.

Its does, no need for a pouch

I better buy a watch winder to keep it moving then

Thank you all so much for sharing your recommendations and experience. Some really good ideas here.

I wasn’t aware of the method to disable the keyless entry so that’s great to know. Looks like a Ghost is a no-brainer too.

I’ve done a little browsing of local retailers online and will look at ceramic coating and maybe PPF too (depending on the condition when I take ownership).

4 more sleeps!

Cheers, Oysterburger

23Romeo Tango gave me a great tip some time ago.
Immediately behind the rear arches underneath the bumper will get peppered with stone chips. Get some sort of protection there ASAP.
Also behind the front wheel arch can get chipped there too.
I purchased some stone deflectors from a crowd called carbon wurks, they are for a C class, but I'm going to make them fit my own car.
I just need the weather to stop emptying rain on me.

I am really pleased with mine. I never warmed to the issues with matt paint, on a previous car, but by all accounts it's much better now.

Just a couple of observations, I would make is that they are really tyre sensitive especially now it's cold. Pressures, Makes (mine was really noisy and jittery on the factory Pirellis but much improved on Michelins) and I would recommend swapping winter summer. There are also quite a few recent dealer updates (free) that seem to have improved a few niggles. In comfort, it now seems to have far less throttle delay and the battery drain, when left for a few days, is hugely improved. It also seems to use the 4 cylinder shut down far more.

Have you 20" alloys?
Was there much difference in tyre noise then?

Battery drain, please elaborate a bit more.
I've been getting starter battery critical messages more frequently recently.
For example, on Saturday I washed the car, it was sitting unlocked for approximately 1.5 hours and it began complaining about the starter battery.
It never fails to start, but it does seem to be a problem.
I drove the car on a journey to a shopping centre which took about 10 mins. As soon as I stopped it, it moaned again about the battery.
I left that place, drove on a 40 minute journey, after stopping the car it did not moan about the battery, but Mercedes me says starter battery partly charged.

Stop/start rarely kicks in these days, really only if i'm on a long journey

Oh, and tyre skipping on the Pirelli's in this cold weather is pretty bad when the tyre is cold, i.e. first thing in the mornings.
Not so bad once a wee bit of heat is in the tyre

Yes 20 inch. Less tyre noise and less crabbing etc from the Michelins and obviously way less on the winters.

Mine would go from Fully charged to partially charged if not driven for a couple of days to critical after about 10. One of those OBD solar chargers helped when it was parked in long stays but even then 4 weeks brought up up critical. Did always start. Now it seems to stay fully charged most of the time. Leaving it unlocked during washing, used to do as you describe, but I disable keyless during washing now so I don't know if this has been addressed.

Congrats on the purchase.

I can recommend a ghost! only concern i had was if someone wants the car that bad and is willing to break in what would they do when it won’t start for them on your drive...

I highly recommend ppf had it done on mine and had saved the paintwork over the two years of ownership from chips and someone catching the front end in a car park (not me ).

I think the starter battery is a common issue. Mine regularly goes to critical if left for a couple of days. It’s going into Mercedes in a few weeks to be checked out along with a few updates. Only had one instance where it completely drained the battery and wouldn’t start ☹️.

It’s a great car and perfect with a family, boot size is great for when we go away and pushchairs etc.

Do let us know how you get on with Mercedes and the battery issue please.
I mentioned it to my dealer when it was serviced 2 months ago, they said they couldn't seen anything particularly wrong and put the car on charge for a number of hours.
They said it would need booked in and have more time spent on it.

Do Mercedes dealers automatically apply updates during a service?
