Looking at the original invoice, in the list of options on the car, one of the lines reads as follows:

915......70 Litre Fuel Tank/90 Litre W124 & C124......£66.77

Does anyone know if this means my E320 Coupe does indeed have a heo-wge petrol tank? I don't want to have to spend the cash to find out the 'easy' way :)

That's the thing though - does a W124 Coupe = C124?

Would the original owner have been charged £66.77+VAT for a standard 70L fuel tank?

Yes a W124 Coupe is sometimes referred to as a C124, as is a C126 etc.
Not sure about the tank though.

If you remove the rear trim panel in the boot covering the tank you should be able see the TANK. It may have a label or part no on it which may help to identify it. To remove the trim bend down the 2 rear facing tabs at the top and bend the panel out slightly in the centre so that it slips out of the slots in the side panels. Its pretty robust so should take a slight bend ok.

Why not just run the car until the fuel light comes on (9 litres remaining or something), then put 72 litres in it. If if fits, it's a 90 litre tank. If not, it isn't.

I have to say that if you're unwilling to fill up the petrol tank, then a classic Mercedes wasn't the car for you. They're not cheap to run, you know....

The 70 litre tank was standard. The 90 litre tank was an option that, I believe, was very rarely taken up and is not worth it as a retro-fit. I did enquire about that when I bought my first coupé from a main dealer, as I had been used to the very convenient 500-mile range of an Audi 100. Still, on long trips, I'm getting 400 miles out of my present coupé.

I think a 90 litre tank is the perfect size, the bigger the better

Dave!

As previously said, run the tank as low as possible then fill it. On my 70 litre tank, when the light comes on I get about 60 litres or so in. If you get upwards of 70 litres, it is a 90 litre tank.

When my light comes on I get about 75 litres in, most I ever had was 82.

£70 sounds far too cheap for a tank upgrade to be honest but Merc tend to be a bit odd on pricing.

I only drive about 150 miles a month (weekend jaunts).

...as I mentioned I was hoping to find out the size of my fuel tank the 'cheaper' way! :)

I think the V8s had a 90ltr tank which could explain why the option isn't that expensive. Codes are always available on this site.

'915 = fuel tank with increased capacity'

Yes, im pretty sure the 500E and E420 (+ 400E) came with 90 litre tanks.

Has anybody not thought that this question is entirely superfluous as the poster has no intention of using whatever capacity tank is on the car anyway.

Just leave him to forever wonder - miserly g.t

(In jest of course - but the thought was there)
