Ebay numbskull O' The Day!

His ears are burning. I emailed and suggested that with all the people telling him what it is he might look under the bonnet. Oh well he's taken the advice. Now waiting for a smart reply.

Got a reply, his mistake, changing it...bet he feels stupid. But imagine how he'd feel if he knew the fun we've had...

I'm sure Neil will be getting an email apology shortly ;)

edit: I love that response Neil received below!!! :) :) pure comedy.
It makes me wonder what he thinks the 'V' in V6 means.

He has replied to me again:

Dear xxxxxxx,

I guess your don,t know the meaning of six cylinder, mercedes call it straight six,but in the engine world its classified as a v6,,and by the way no ones forcing you to buy or even view,so why are taking your time for silly things like this..have a day mate.

So, I have a V6...brill..

i dont know why he's trying to make out its a v6 anyway... .s6 is so much nicer... :)

Honestly, v6 or i6....it's still a six-cyl car.

Do people really have so much spare time on their hands to search for these and send send emails to wind people up about such detail ?

On other forums (fori?) there is a usually a thread for various ebay stupidities which members find amusing. About time we had one here.

I'll start with this one.

Mercedes Benz 190E 2.6 V6 Special Order

Mercedes Benz 190E 2.6 V6 Special Order (sony mex-5d1) on eBay (end time 27-Sep-09 02:11:35 BST)

I emailed the owner to say "I think you made a mistake, check under your bonnet & you'll see it's a straight 6" & got this indignant reply

"I think its you who don,t really know much about engines, let me educate you a bit....all mercedes over 2.5 fall in the category of v6..check it out on the internet if you have one,,or pop into your nearest dealer on info about my car and they will tell you...thanks for your question.

I love ebay!

Very amusing .

Having read his amended listing , now admitting the presence of an inline 6 , I sent the following comment -

"Please be advised that this model does NOT have 'electric central locking' : the central locking system on this , and all Mercedes cars of the era , is VACUUM OPERATED and far superior to the unreliable and noisy systems on more plebian cars . If you look under the back seat , right hand side , you will find the vacuum pump that drives the system , enclosed in a soundproofing foam box .Kind regards , Derek ."

I will await his response with curiosity . Someone who has had a car 9 years really ought to know it quite well .

^ You are right. But in this case a helpful person advising the seller that his car is misdescribed was treated rudely and hence got the treatment.

It is vacuum operated, but the signal that triggers the vacuum pump to lock/unlock is an electric signal (a 3 second ground pulse to lock and a 3 second +12v signal to unlock). So to call it 'electronic CL', whilst not strictly true by definition, is not strictly incorrect either.

You know, with the exception of the useful comment Derek posted about "another forum" above which I completely agree with, this thread is just pointless.

No offence intended Neil, seeing as you started the thread, but it has efffectively degenerated into a form of bear baiting. A waste of bandwidth in my opinion.

He has , at least , modified his listing without a complaint .

EDIT - Actually , I just checked my email , and he sent me the following perfectly reasonable reply -

"Thanks Derek,,i have learnt a lot today about cars,,
i did not know this, because on ebay it says electric
locking on the options so i just click yes, for me
to get pass. Thanks,i will change that now."

Sigh.

I wasn't trying to wind him up, I was pointing out an error in his listing. I was actually trying to be helpful in the mild hope he'd correct the listing so he wouldn't appear to be ignorant of the item he was selling. It was his incredible reply that prompted me to start this thread, not the minor mistake in his listing.

I find your incredulity that "people really have so much spare time on their hands to search for these" disingenuous at best. Do you honestly think I spend my time looking for ebay members to pick a fight with? I was looking for 190E 2.6s just as you probably look on ebay.co.uk, ebay.de, ebay.com & other sites every day for interesting parts & cars from AMG, Carat, Lorinser, SGS et al.

I'm afraid the irony of your post on the details of central locking, quoted below, immediately after the one above is to striking too let slip past. Thanks for that.

Hello again inn4o.

No irony, it's called technical detail.

What you did was try and mock someone who knew less than you...the title of your thread very clearly displays the intentions that you had.

Hilarious ....

Reads like a scam email from Nigeria.

I love ebay!

If we remind ourselves of the original post, it is clear to me at least, that Neil was simply trying to help the seller, by advertising the car correctly. How many potential buyers were being put off thinking the car may have had the engine replaced with a V6? Neil not only had is help rejected but thrown back in his face.
