I have a 2004 , 270 CLK CDI, I only bought it a this week and I have noticed that the engine, bonnet and wings are extremely hot after a journey. The odd thing is that the temperature gauge doesnt go higher than mid point.

The bonnet gets that hot it cant be touched.

Has anyone any ideas what is causing this.

Fully warmed up the temperature gauge should be indicating round 88-90 degrees C, if it is indicating much lower then your thermostat is probably faulty, it is a common failure.

Does the cooling fan cut in at all? If this is also faulty (or the sensor that triggers it) it could explain your high under bonnet temperatures.

Thanks for the reply. The fan is going around from the outset and to be honest I havn't heard the cooling fan kick in, guess I would hear that. Is this a big job if it is the cooling fan or the sensor etc. ?

I assume you are saying that this is not weather related. Down here in the South, cars can get too hot to touch pretty quickly, depending on the colour, and how long sun is out, and that is before it even moves.

Regarding fan, mine runs the fan always, it seems, when the aircon is on (which seems to be always at moment) regardless of how hot the engine may be.

Basically, it may be normal. If all the undertrays are still fitted, there is not many escapes for the heat.

Neil,

its definitely not weather related, I live in Manchester and it has been raining all day. !

I getting it full serviced on Friday so will get the garage to check. Thanks

It's definitely been a cold week here in Greater Manchester. If your car had not been so hot it would have been much colder for all of us living here. Thank you
