HI, my ML is 12 years old, do i change the engine oil to the spec that merc recommend which is 5w40 or do i use what the independant garage say and use 10w40.

Merc's reasoning is due to what it says in the book
The indi's is due to it being 10 years +

which would you recommend

I've just put Mobil 1 New Life 0w40 in my 2005 C270 CDI (Mercedes Recommended)

There are several alternatives which are suitable according to Mobil and their recommendations. The one they recommend for your car is Mobil 1 Turbo Diesel 0w40.
Take a look at their 'Which Oil For My Car' oil finder.
Which Oil for my Car? - Mobil™ UK & Ireland
The alternatives are listed below the recommended.

Don't forget that MB Club members qualify for discount on oil at EuroCarParts if you order online and collect from your local ECP or get it delivered FOC. (Depending on your location).

Are you doing the oil change yourself or would the Indie use oil supplied by you as it may work out cheaper. 6 litres of the above oil cost me £46.88 using MBClub30 discount code at ECP. Genuine MB oil filter was £10.80 from main dealer.

Sorry to add to the choice.

Thank you. I brought a borsch oil filter online for £5 yesterday. Just the oil left.

I'm going to do it myself, my brother-inlaw is a mechanic down South and will be doing it for me, he just asked me to get the oils and filters ready for him to change, when he comes up.

I'll need about 7.5 litres right?

Yes, 7.5 litres according to the info on Mobil's link, but if you have a handbook check it in there and tell him not to put the full amount in to start with, as over filling will throw up an overfill fault warning.

Don't know if you have the luxury of a dipstick, I don't, mine is electronic, so as mine takes 6.5 litres I added 6 litres, checked it and the reading said 'oil level ok'. I then added another 0.25 of a litre. Always better to be slightly under than over with Mercs.

I found out while doing mine that removing the plastic filter holder is a bit awkward due to lack of access space for fingers/hands. I have now bought a tool/wrench for next time. It may be worth checking that he has one of these as although it's do-able without it's damn awkward. If you intend to order one, make sure to get the correct size. You will need to measure the filter holder and count the number of flutes. mercedes oil filter wrench - Google Search

I'm assuming that your filter is mounted at the top of the engine at the front, the same as mine.
You should also have 3 different sized O rings with the filter if it's the same.

P.S. If you go with getting the oil from EuroCarParts, the MBClub discount is only valid for online transactions and not available if just popping into one of their shops. Must be ordered online to qualify!

7.2L is the norm.

well its a toss up between shell or mobil or castrol, as they're all about £20 for 5 litres.
