Hi all,

We've just accquired our first ever Mercedes - a 1994 E320 estate and are extremely pleased with it apart from an annoying niggle with the accelerator pedal and the bulb warning light. Discussing the pedal here - it requires a LOT of pressure to move off and a fair amount to keep going so as a result slotting into gaps on round-abouts can be quite, shall we say, entertaining and it's very difficult to maintain a constant speed whilst cruising. Would this be likley to be the cable the pedal or a. n. other linkage somwhere in the system that needs attention?? If it's the cable - is this an easy thing to do or a nighmare as was the case with our friends BMW???

Thanks in advance,

Neil.

By design the throttle on a W124 is quite heavy, but if it is notchy, ie you press, then press a bit more and then it gives way, then it's most likely that you need a new throttle cable, which is £30+vat +fitting and not that time consuming for a Indi Merc dealer.

Many thanks! I like nice simple solution - was afraid it might have been the throttle linkages.
Now to find a god indi around the Dagenham, Essex area...........

Well - the wife took the beastie into an independent agent last night (BNW Services, High Road, Seven Kings, Essex) to get a quote for the cable being replaced.
Bad news is that it isn't the cable - it's the throttle linkage(s) and the repair cost is up in the low 3 figure mark.
Apparently it was worn and some one had tried to make things better by greasing it - which had then attracted dirt and grit and made things worse...
Sort of good news is that they are going to try getting the cost paid for under the warranty that came with the car..... Fingers crossed!!!

Not to worry!! Basildon is a bit far away from us too. We'll see how this chap fares, got him on recommendation from friends who used to have a 5 series BMW and they highly recommended him.....

Good news!!
Car went in last night and we collectd it mid-day today, final bill was £94 - of which £14 was the infamous DRAT!!
Apparently he stripped down the linkages and re-lubricated them. Charged us 2 hours labour and the improvement is almost unbelievable - we can now pull away with out leaping forwards and can hold speeds less than 20 mph. also don't get cramp in the leg from the pressure.

We'll use hime when the next service is due (153,000 I think) and if all goes well will add him to the recommended thread.
